Fall photos

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

Well it's officially fall....I went around the garden today to take a few pics. Still a few things blooming. My Aster novi-belgii is nearly fully out but the A. dumosus are barely showing colour.

The Colchicums are starting...most are just in bud but C. agrippinum is now open.

Todd, I like the picture of the Clematis alpina. Has a grass-like effect.

All wonderful pictures.

I never thought of putting Cyclamen in the garden. Looks great. Do you take them in for the winter?

Beautiful flowers Todd. I especially like your asters. For some unknown reason, I've never had any luck getting asters established in my own gardens. --Ginny

Ann, Cyclamen hederifolium should be hardy in Ottawa....I leave mine out year-round. They produce the leaves throughout the fall then stay green through the winter. The leaves remain green until about mid-July when the plant goes dormant. It then flowers in September. I put some evergreen boughs over them in the winter to reduce wind burn and lessen freeze-thaw cycle.

Lovely Todd. I too love asters but have a problem here because of the short growing season - usually they are just starting to bloom when there is a killing frost.

Todd, is that Cyclamen the same as we see in stores as a house plant? Or something that we have to look for at a nursery? I'm not really up on all my complete plant names.

Todd, beautiful pics. I, too, would be interested to know whether the Cyclamen is a hardy variety.

The cyclamen is not the standard florist type. C. hederifolium is bought as a dormant bulbs (tuber) in September. I've only seen them for sale in a local nursery just once...the ones I have were raised from seed. You can get them in Canada from Fraser Thimble Farms or Beaver Creek Greenhouses, both located in BC. Zone 4 might be pushing it but if your snowcover is reliable, you should be OK.

I really enjoyed your pics Todd. Your japanese maple is gorgeous. I have a red threadleaf weeping one that I can't wait for it to grow up.
