Wilma
well, maybe I should let others tell you. I've been told that it's a wonderful scent, myself, can't really notice much to write home about at all.
Linda
I have one of these creatures but it has never bloomed...what's the trick Wilma? Your's is beautiful to say the least!
Todd no trick I just planted the cutting and had it outside till last week when I noticed the bud ..
maybe it just liked the cool nights..
Wilma
What can I say Wilma - that is gorgeous.
You may be right when you mention the cooler temps., as this triggers blooms on many plants.

Oh I love that cactus flower Wilma. It puts my little yellow guys to shame it does. Thanks for sharing! --Ginny
Thanks Ann, Roselaine, Ginny,
Well guess that is what that plant needed was to be outside,,
too bad the bloom only last a day, found out it did smell a bit like lemons........
hope I get more blooms from this plant in the next few months, if not there is always next year...
now wonder if my christmas cactus will do the same , it is still outside in the screen room.. muct bring in more plants before frost,, which will be here Wed, night...
Wilma
What a gorgeous flower. What type of cactus is it?
Ann
WOW that flower is awesome.
Now that IS worth waiting for Wilma!
Looks like an epi, specifically a night blooming cereus. Lots of info/how-to's on the new orchid cactus forun: http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/episetc/
WOW That's a " Night Blooming Cerus Plant ! " " Queen of the night " Some readings say a plant needs to be five years old until it blooms then it blooms once a year. Mine has bloomed at least 12 times this year sense spring. Last week five big flowers opened again :)) The vanillia aroma was so strong. Mine grows outside year round. It is about 125 years old was from my Great Grandmothers plant. Two years ago my Aunt in her 80's gave me a small plant. Mine is pretty big and I have given dozens of plants/and dozens more cutting away. I just treasure mine !
Picture of the bud forming it take a long time . Then the flowers are so big takes two hand to holdm the beauties. Then to last only one night.
Maybe it is a Queen of the Night.. Catcus.
Anna
Picture of some of my Night Blooming Cerus Flowers.
A couple weeks later it had five more big flowers. It sure has earned it's name " Queen of the Night" Most of it's life my plant grew up in Mass. as an inside huse plant. I live in Florida and can grow it out all night excpt on few nights we get frost. It grows well inside or out under any conditons. It fascinates me !
What are the best conditions to get this plant to flower? Full Sun? Shade? or a little of each?
I have one plant and it has only flowered once many years ago.....
Anna
What a beautiful flower. How exciting, I have never had a cactus flower for me.
Cindy

I had never had one bloom for me either till thaat one did,
but guess what, the catus that I got from your parents is about to bloom too, I just brought it in the house 2 weeks ago, I had it in my screen room where the temps are nice and warm.. and as so as we brought it in it started setting buds, so I guess the cold treament does work as these both bloomed for me,,
will send a picture when it is in full bloom..
Wilma
Lots of information, photos, etc. on these in the somewhat new Orchid Cactus Forum

Dill Pickle, is that the one from Chilco at the RU in April?
Inanda
Inanda,
No it is from my friend,
Wilma
Wilma, I would love to see a pic of the other cactus when it blooms. I will pring a pic of it and show it to my dad. I know my mom had great success with all her plants blooming in the past years. She just hadn't been able to fuss over them recently the way she used to. That very tall snake plant I gave you was about 28 years old, it came as a tiny piece from the old International Inn by the airport, I used to work there, and it was from around the pool area. I did manage to bring some shamrocks from Wpg that had been my grandmothers, and then my mothers. I put them outside and did they ever do well , now they are in the green house, but will come inside soon.
Cindy

yes for sure I will take a picture, I am watching it , waiting for the blooms to open,,
Good about the shamrocks as I remember your Dad wanting to bring those with him.
The tall snake plant was given to my sister, as she wanted it,,
Wilma
Wilma, I had my Christmas cactus outside and it was knocked off its stand by severe wind storms that we had a couple of weeks back. It was so big and heavy that the pot was smashed to smithereens and even root-ball was badly mangled. Was going to pass it over to my daughter as it was getting too big and cumbersome for me to handle. She has more indoor room than I and is better able to haul it around.
I got over 15 years enjoyment from it.
Hoping it will survive.
Joan
can't kill those things is my take on it LOL
Lovely flowers ladies! Ü
I've got a yellow and a salmon one now that I hope I will be able to post pics of their blooms here sometime in the future.
