Hurricane Rita - some good pet news!

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

I'm posting this on the Pet Forum because I'm sure it will be good news to those of us who would never evacuate and leave our pets. FINALLY, there is evidence that people are beginning to understand that if they want people out of harms way, they have to make provisions for their pets. The BEST news was that they allowed people to take their pets on the evacuation buses in carriers.

"More than 250 dogs and nearly 80 cats rode out Hurricane Rita at a shelter set up specifically for them at the Walker County Fairgrounds. A couple of the animals needed medical attention at some time during their stay, but all of the pets seemed to get through the storm without much trouble.

"We had parakeets, turtles and iguanas out here. It was Noah's ark," said John Tom Powledge of the Walker County Fair Association.

At its peak, there were 251 dogs, 79 cats, 34 birds, three lizards, one turtle and one spider at the shelter, said Dusty Boullion, an animal health inspector with the Texas Animal Health Commission. "We also had horses and cattle and some show animals from other counties."
