Mt Zion, IL(Zone 5b)

Oh my goodness - - I'm drooling all over the keyboard!! GORGEOUS pictures ~~~ thanks for sharing. Am I seeing that right - - the price tag on that "Pink Patches" is only $6.00?!?! Holy moly...I paid about twice that on eBay to get a teeny little starter plantlet. *sigh* Ah well, I hope it grows and blooms as well as the one in your picture.
Doghouse - - did you need a U-Haul to get the ones you bought back home?? =0)

Paducah, KY

Hey there. I bought 6 beautiful AV's from the show. And Betsy, the prices were wonderful. I bought 6 beautiful, mature violets for 23 bucks!! I got a Private Dancer (huge) for 4. I didn't know it at the time, but they took the spikes out of the pot that I was counting on to identify my new ones. I also met some lovely people and I was invited to the next Paducah chapter AV meeting. I can't wait! There are More pics, but I cannot post. Melody was nice enough to post them for us. (BIG thank you Mel) Wish you all could have been there!

I also want to thank Janet930 who could figure out the digital camera when I could not! She drove almost an hour to go with me. She went ga-ga over the minis.

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Ok, here's a few more...they sure were lovely little things...glad you got a new habit sis!

Melody - thanks for the photos!

Well, yes, I am curious.... was this a big show? About how many plants on show? How much on sale? Were they mostly individual member's plants or were there vendors as well? I've never been to an AV show so I'm kinda curious.

Sounds like you met some friendly people - hope the chapter meetings work out :-)

Paducah, KY

I was a pretty small show as far as the # of plants. I would say about 300 plants. The AV group put it on and they were all selling their own stuff from what I gathered. There were no other vendors. I saw nothing over ten bucks, and the plants were BEAUTIFUL. I think the ladies were thinning their violets out to make room for more. They were even selling the show plants. You had to pick them up as the mall was closing, they had to keep their displays nice for shoppers. I didn't buy the display plants, because everything was SSSOOO nice, that it was hard to tell which were which. I only saw about 4 ladies there. The chapter is very small, and they are hungry for new members. I wish I had a pro with us. I did, however find out the orchid show at the mall is March 24. (not the same people) It's a little bigger show. OHH! they had a HUGE box of baggies with a single leaf in them for a dollar. Those were going like hotcakes.

Mayfield, KY(Zone 7b)

Can you help me remember doghouse what they said about the cuttings. She said to put them in a small container, keep moist in a baggy and put them where? A dark place or light place? I forgot what she said. I am going to try that myself to see what happens. I have been reading where you are suppose to cut the tip of the leaf off. I will try that little trick also. I think I am going to have to move to a bigger house if we pick up ONE MORE hobby. I need to pick up the "hobby" of house cleaning right now but just can't get as interested.

You know, it think it was light place. Any way we need to take up a hobby that doesn't take up space. How about marthons?

Mt Zion, IL(Zone 5b)

Doghouse:
Never having been to a show....300 African Violets in one place sounds HUGE to me! I can't IMAGINE a 'really big shoe' (as Lawrence Welk use to say!). I am glad you got to go...but I must confess, I AAAAAMM slightly jealous. =0)
But my 3 high school daughters went to Homecoming and had a wonderful time.
Here is a picture of me with my 16-year old (in black) and my 15 year old (in turquoise).

Sounds like you had a great time. Beautiful avs. Thanks for sharing.

Nanna

Paducah, KY

Hey Betsy! BEAUTIFUL girls in beautiful dresses. I wish you could have been there. You should have seen us walking through the mall. I needed a wagon, and so did Janet. Nanna, I will post pics of what I bought, now that they are potted nicely. AND I found a corner to put another grow light for more orchids. Ha! Will prevail on DH and my sister to take and post the pics asap.

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Got news for you sis...you're gonna have to learn...you need a crash course in 'computer 101'...

All she's been able to do up to this point is play solitaire and bid on ebay folks!

Loveland, CO(Zone 5b)

LOL, Doghouse...I can't let this opportunity pass by:

Can you outline for me *precisely* your method for getting a "private dancer" for 4 bucks?!?!!!!! :) LOL

Alright, I'm sorry DGers, I know we try to keep it clean... but sheesh, I was surprised no one said it before me! :) haha :)

Congratulations on all your new "babies"! Now get thee to Rob's violets and read up on propagation, so we can swap! :) haha We're an AV hungry crowd! (and some of us are also hungry for actual private dancers, evidently lol)

Thanks for sharing the pictures, I sure did enjoy them! :)

Sarah

P.S. I haven't talked to my grandma yet, but don't worry... I haven't forgotten about the plant I promised you ;)

Sarah

Paducah, KY

Hey Sarah! The private dancer was a steal! LOL! AND doing beautifully. You are right about one thing, though, I need to learn to spread these beauties around. Am really looking forward to the round up at Prizer Point. Hoping I will get some tips there.

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

I hope the RU provides tips on photo posting too :P

I also think 300 plants sounds like a pretty good show :-)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)
