Which way is UP?

Mt Zion, IL(Zone 5b)

Hi all ~~
I know this is going to sound reeeeally stupid but..........I've always wondered.....how do you know which way is UP when planting an epie cutting? I really had to sit back and think about it when I got my first cuttings and just took a guess. I must've got it right as I've got new growth on *most* of them. But I'm starting to wonder about the ones that aren't showing new growth; maybe I have them UPSIDE DOWN?!
This picture shows two cuttings, bought and planted at the same time. Obviously, one is doing great and has new growth. (Moloch)...but the other (Star Gem) looks exactly like it did the day I planted it.....which was probably in early June.
Is it possible it's planted in there upside down?
THANKS EVERYONE!

Hi Betsy,
That is a good question. To me it looks like you planted the epi in the right direction. I don't know if it makes any difference. Some of my epi's are slower to start growing then others. I had an older, battered epi that took months while it settled in before it started putting out new growth.
It is going to be interesting to hear others experiences.

You did it right, Betsy. The points or bumps are going up.

*PHEW* (sign of relief) Thanks, Donna! I was really starting to wonder. Sooooo, some of them are just slower to grown than others then? As long as the cutting is green and firm, does that mean it's okay?
thanks..

I think it would be. Your epi's look like they are dong fine.. I have had some start turning brown at the bottom, to much watering or bad conditions. I just make a fresh cut and try again. Mine ususally will start growing after that.
Good Luck,

I have planted a couple upside down, they produced a new shoot about as fast as those planted correctly. So it probably does not matter.

Betsy, I have a few cuttings I got last summer that have taken a FULL YEAR to show new growth. Just hang in there with them!
