OK...here start some pictures, theme started by Ric and then Awanda posted. These are where I grow the hoyas not in the GH....I guess you would call them my Mother Plants. Basically I grow them hanging from poles or trees, or up trees. This is H. erythrina.....deep shade but lots of indirect light.
My own hoyas....how they grow
Off a corner of the back of the house is a huge stand of bamboo (of the 'Bamboo Shoots' kind). We have bent the culms down (not easy) and use them to hang hoyas...and they look like spokes of a wheel. They live out there all year...in rain, drought etc. basically it is shady, with early morning or late afternoon sun. That's H. cv. Ruthie growing up the tree...in the group are H. sp. PNG 1, H. siariae, H. thomsonii and some others...?.

Here is a H. carnosa cv. Krinkle 8 that I put out to grow up a tree. At first it depends upon the pot....but once it starts climbing the tree...I can cut it out of the pot and it will travel upwards and be happy as a pig in XXXX.
I have a lot more spots where the hoyas grow...but basically, they grow up trees, from trees or from poles between trees. And now they are converging and making a mess!!!
This last shot is of a group of trees with some bamboo poles with hoyas and hoyas growing up t he trees. They have all grown together: H. sussuela, H. ciliata, H. cv. Girlie, H. coronaria x H. lauterbachii cross #4, H. camphorifolia, H. vitellinoides, H. cv. MM and maybe a couple more. ? That is H. camphorifolia in the hanging pot very visible...it is 14' up the tree. The others were started in pots at the base of the tree....I just pile mulch, fert. and water on them...

Maria
Wow!! It all looks wonderful Carol. How about a not so frozen Canuck?
Sandy
Oh Carol
I moving to Hawaii right now. Christina are you going with me? What a dreem to grow Hoyas like you do. It looks so wonderful.
Have a nice weekend
Rosita
Wow...you really DO live in a jungle of hoyas. Better keep a machette handy. If you take a nap, you are apt to wake up incased like a spider. Ha.
All kidding aside....way to GROW, Carol.
Marcy
Oh my gosh! That's AWESOME Carol! Literally a jungle of hoyas!!
I can't imagine. Living here in Central Illinois, I have a small screened-in porch with my 4 or 5 hoyas hanging from pots or growing up a trellis and have to bring them all in from mid October to late May. IMAGINE having your whole back yard as a growing plot!
I go out and mow my grass once a week...and you go out with your Machette and chop hoyas! Not fair! LOL
Thanks for sharing.
OMG Carol......the hoyas are taking over. Thanks for sharing......just love the natural setting and the how you use the bamboo as supports for the hanging hoyas. If you ever want to swap houses for a month or two let me know. I promise to control my urge to take a cutting or two.
How wonderful to be able to grow them outside!
carol
Yeah but I taught her everything she knows:-). Beautiful, but where is the Pottsii:-)?????
Blessings,
Awanda
Boy, your jungle has grown Carol! I feel a bad case of Zone Envy coming on. Great pictures!
Awanda, where would we all be had we not had you as our leader?
Wow.... :0 outstanding. Carol what an awesome collection.
Carol - Your hoyas are absolutely beautiful. Gee, I'd love to see them in person, is Hawaii anywhere near Illinois????LOL Karen
Take your pick, Awanda...according to some, the world is one big H. pottsii!!
Grateful and appreciative,
Carol
I wish I could say that I am gifted, clever, have a green hand...but honestly, it is the climate and good luck! Most all I do is go out and say "Morning, Girls"... Growing outdoors they do get bug bites and sometimes the leaves look...ahem...not so perfect...and I have to pull the weeds (Boston Fern, Scheffelera) out of the pots. Pulling those bamboo poles down is about the toughest part of the job aside from repotting!!!
Ric...if we ever need a housesitter...I will call you!!! All the cuttings you want and lots of rain! - and no hurricanes (to date...another one on a threatening path).
Carol
Åh thatīs lovely, hope that I can put my hoyas outside next summer to :) Looks like they are liking it a lot! :)
Carol, I think you better start building guest houses so that we all can come and visit for a long, long time...lol. You have such a neat way of displaying and taking care of your hoyas.
:) Donna
Carol, I think you must be the luckiest woman in the world!!
Forget building guest houses, I think most of us on this list will be staying a little longer...you don't mind, of course you don't. We'll be like bad fish - sure we overstay our welcome and stink up the place, but eventually you get used to the smell (lol).
Thanks for sharing those beautiful pictures!
Carol, WOW! It's more beautiful than I ever pictured. And believe me my imagination is pretty grand! If you ever need an "intern" for the repotting, give me a call!
