AV rescue from HD and Lowe's

Graham, NC(Zone 8a)

Hi Ya'll :)

I went to Home Depot and Lowe's today. Lo and behold, I found myself in the garden departments....lol It was a hauntingly mysterious call...I just couldn't stop myself. While browsing in HD, I found a "Miho" in a 4" pot, a "Blackfoot Girl" and a "Creek Girl" (gotta look these up), both in 2" pots. I talked them down to $1.50 for the 4" pot and $.75 each for the 2" pots. Then when I was drving past Lowe's, I heard that hauntingly mysterious call again. I just had to stop. When I got inside, where all the AV's and other indoor plant are usually kept...they were gone!! Would you believe there was Xmas lights, ornaments, etc there!! I found the indoor plants stuck in a corner all by their lonesome. while looking for the AV's ( which were scattered all over the place), I found an AV that didn't have pot to sit in...lol It had been in a 4" pot, but just no pot. Have they (Lowe's ) no shame??? lol After tracking the lady in charge of the GC, I talked her down to $.50. I got a $.60 pot to bring it home in. No tag...of course, but the AV is at least 8" across. It had already bloomed, but couldn't tell what color it is. After getting them and really looking at them...they didn't look that bad...a little triming and let them dry out a little (all were soaking wet). Hope I can bring tem back around. I've got to stop driving by these places...I'm running out of room!!! lol

You are definitely "my kind of people," Eric! Sounds like you got some bargain beauties. I hope they recover from their soaking wet state... I'm sure you can bring them back around, as you said.

Do the little violets have "girl" foliage (leaves with ruffled edges & light centers)? I have several of these now, and they are really charming.... I've got leaves started so I'll have "girl" babies to trade in spring (big hint, LOL).

LOL Eric - were you in HD for a reason or did you just sorta find yourself there?

Nice haul - especially with the named ones. Think this is your Miho? http://www.optimara.com/optimarafieldguide/varietiesm-z/miho.html

We are very (un)lucky here - our local HD and Lowes have NOTHING. At least not when I go. I have basically stopped going, and thankfully the nearest garden center is a bit further so I don't go as often!

(but there is always the net....)

Hi Key,

I stopped at HD to get a clamp-on worklight and one of those screw-in flouresent bulbs (daylight) for my AV's (I'll take a pic when I get it set up). $12.00 for both light and bulb. No room for strip lights right now. But have a steel wire shelving unit coming in so I can put all my plants on inside for the winter. Btw...that is the "Miho"

Here is the Creek Girl

Here is the Blackfoot Girl

Critter,

I'm not sure...can you tell by the pictures? I would've gotten more of the AV's, but some I think, were beyond help. Besides, wouldn't know where to put them...lol

I'm pretty sure neither of those have "girl" foliage. I was wondering because of the name... "girl foliage" is actually called that because it first cropped up in a series of cultivars with "Girl" in the name.

Here's a link to a page at Rob's showing 'Peppermint Girl', with "girl foliage"

And here's a picture of a NOID I call "rosie girl" that I think shows the leaf pretty well.

Eric~
So you've really been bitten by the AV bug, I see! LOL. Crack me up. They need to put a warning on all violets...*WARNING! The surgeon general has determined that buying one African Violet {or getting one for free, as I think your case is} will potentially lead to a lifetime addiction. Proceed with caution."
Do you have a WalMart close by? Check there - ours has a dozen violets on the 50% off rack. Let me know if you want to rescue them - I'll pick them up for you. I can't bring them home - I don't have any more room and my husband would KILL ME if I brought another one into the house. LOL
Good finds, though, on your outings to the "hardware store"!

Hi Betsy :)

LOL...I agree!! Kinda like Lays potato chips..you can't have just one!!I really appreciate it, but right now, I don't have any room either :( Thanks anyway though!!
Question again....lol "The Hawaiian Pearl" you sent me has a couple of the leaves turning brown at the tips and curling down. What could it be and what do I need to do??

Eric~~
If the leaves are all still nice and firm....my first guess would be too much sun/light. You don't have them sitting in a southerly window, do you? If so, try east.
In the mean time, just cut them off and watch the rest. =0)

Betsy,

Had them sitting at a west window. None of the others are showing any browning or curling. I'll cut them off and watch them. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks!!
