Do banana plants get mildew ? I think that's what I'm looking at ('-'?)
I have a 6 ft tall Apple Banana seedling that has tiny black specks on the stem and leaves.
I looked with the 30x loupe and didn't see any critters.
This is just since we have finally been getting rains .
My tropicals are all closely planted to create a micro climate.
I love the apple nana because the stems are so pretty being a pale green with a pink tinge and what I call tiger stripes. Can you tell I look at her ALOT ?
My pictures didnt turn out so I'll take some more.
Mildew on Bananas ?
Mildew is usually gray, silver or white unless it's caused from honeydew from insects, then it's black. Do you think it's bug poo?
Hi Susie, you have been on my mind a lot the last couple days. I hope you are in a safe place.
No I don't think its bug-poo, I can not feel anything.
I looked a little while ago and the spots can be seen on the other side of the leaf almost like a burn thru.
The way these are progressing I'm starting to think it might have gotten overspray when I sprayed some other plants with http://stonebrothers.com/products.php?pid=319&openparent=116
I usually don't panic like this but this is my first year growing 'nanas .
I love the way they look planted near my ricinus communis 'monster castor' plants ;-)
Truly a Wisconsin Tropic Zone .
It could very well be overspray. Watch the new growth and see if it gets the spots too.
We are under a wind advisory, but no warnings yet. They are not recommending we evacuate, but instead are taking in evacuees from Corpus Christi and Victoria.
They said the surf at the Island is getting rough and there will be some surg probably. With Katrina, we had 12-14 ft waves and they closed the beaches.
Thanks Susie, Tell dem dat Bleu needs his beach.
We just had a very strong storm cell fly thru here with golf ball size hail and high winds.*groan*
I saw the horses high tailing it for the woods out back. I worry so about critters when we get bad hail.
Looking out the window at the garden I can see shredded plants and a lot of layed down plants too.
Oh well, at least I got to se some blooms last week.
hehehe, our 'Tuffy' brug is still standing tall & strong (((*-*)))
While I don't know anything about the 'Apple Banana' (sounds interesting, though, lol!) I have a big potted Bloodleaf, and mine grows and looks beautiful all summer, until the cold nights hit, then it gets something that sounds similar to what your describing....the pretty maroon color begins to fade, too.
So in my case, anyway, I think it wants to come indoors when the temps get in the 40's at night.
We had some pretty low 40's about a week and a half ago....then summer returned!
callalily...hoping you stay safe and unaffected.

lol! evilBay....hadn't heard that before, and how true it can be?!
Wow..your Hilo Beauty *did* grow up nicely!
I had purchased that one a while back (98 or 99?) from Tropiflora...grew it indoors and it did really well for a couple of years, but it eventually was lost.
Which Brug is pictured? Lovely!
I'm surely no 'nanner expert', but I do think the cold is what's giving mine spots....do you think that could be the problem w/yours?
Mine is in *such* a big pot...and I don't have the heart to cut it down in the winter, (nor the 'will' to move that big pot either up or down the stairs!) so I move it out to the sunporch on warm/sunny days during the winter (warms up nicely in there with a south and west exposure,, but never an equivalent to 'summer-warm'....if that makes sense?) and move it just inside the door at night.
Most of the leaves eventually develop those funky spots.
New leaves develop nicely with good color, but they, too, eventually get the spots.
The summer outdoors is a different story, though....no spots....beautiful perfect leaves!
Thanks Nan , the brug is HDW - Hawaiian Double White.
She looks a little ratty cause I tore into her to collect pollen .
there is a tiny black worm which is in one of the leaf skeletonizer groups. i had one on my chinese yellow banana the other day. it looks like a little stained glass window (-minus the colored glass) where he ate. all the green is gone and just brown see-thru leaf. they don't eat like a typical cat. keep checking, just in case. one little guy can do alot of damage. the one i smashed looked like a fat eyelash. debi
Ok you 'nana experts , are these spots normal or not ?
TIA
That's what mine look like, scotterbug....but mine don't look quite as 'consistent', size-wise, as yours.
Someone else must know if *cold* does this to bananas?
