Nightbloomer/Hurricane Rita

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I just called Susan when I realized Rita was heading right for her!!! They are running around collecting animals, things they want to save, hoyas and are about to evacuate! She was offered a haven for her hoyas in the bank she works for in Houston... That girl has her priorities straight!!! I have to admire her calmness and clear thinking....will be thinking a lot about Susan and Dave thru the next couple of days.... Thoughts and prayers. There are more folks in harms way, Texas is pretty flat!!!

Sorry to hear about this, and will also keep Susan in my thoughts/prayers. Where in TX is she located?

Thank goodness they have time to *prepare*, at least!

And....wow!! Great that the bank will let her hoyas spend some time there!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

She is 20miles N. of Galveston. She said as they are preparing to pack up and leave....her neighbours are mowing their lawns!!! Gotta look pretty for Hurricanes!

LOL

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

AArghh...can you believe that!

Sometimes people are in the 'it won't happen to me' frame of mind!

Glad she's above that....better safe than sorry!

New Iberia, LA

I feel her pain, I don't think people are thinking about it not happening I think people just try and stay calm and maybe thats the way sum deal with it. You know Flicker never came back online. Her town really got messed up.I hope and pray Susan and her family fair well,This will be felt as far as New Orleans.Weird thing is all of the people who had to leave new orleans are in Houston! I can't wait til this Hurricane season is over!!!

You must admit, storing Hoyas in a bank is a sign of a true Hoya addict!
Seriously, my thoughts and prayers are with Susan and family. I am glad to hear she evacuated. It takes a great deal of courage to pack up and leave ones home to the elements.
Susan, please do check in when you can!

Having the opportunity to keep your beloved hoyas in a "safer" spot must be of some relief for Susan. I've been keeping Susan and all those in that area in my prayers too. I recenlty heard that its now a category 5 (185 mph) & headed for the Gulf Coast. I've been to Galveston a couple of times & I'd be scared & leaving. They also said I10 was bumper to bumper from people evacuating.

My DH has family in & around the Houston area. He called his parents yesterday & they will be housing some of those relatives at there house because a few have already been evacuated. My inlaws live about 1 1/2 hr. west of Houston so they should be getting some of the force. They told DH they & others in their area are boarding their houses just in case. My SIL is a teacher in Houston. I've got to call her & see how she's doing. I hope she will be able to get out, she's single & lives alone.

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in the gulf area. I am glad people are taking this hurricane seriously and are evacuating. How many days until hurricane season is over?????? When hurricanes hit like they have, everyone in all parts of this country are impacted in some way. Please check in Susan and let us know how you do.

Diane,
How close are you to where Rita is suppose to hit? Are they giving you any warnings yet or evacuations. I know you are inland a ways, but a cat. 5 is a big storm. Be safe !

This is just unbelieveable to me! If bad things come in threes we've got a ways to go! You are all in my thoughts, Susan at the forefront. I honestly don't know if that is a real word! Lol... But I just want to let everyone know they are all in my thoughts. I'm not the brightest at geography, so it is easier to just keep everyone's safety in mind!!

Susan said they evacuated the poor folks from New Orleans to Arkansas so the folks from TX can use the Statium. Gosh...what tragedy!!!

New Iberia, LA

Karen, I am five miles from weeks bay,I live in a boat marrina,it's not safe here. They are telling us to expect 3 to 5 foot surges and maybe higher,it is nothing conpaired to what Texas will get.I have been threw a lot of bad ones in my time but Katrina and Rita are the worst I have ever seen...Last year I felt so bad for Florida they got them all last year!! Florida still hasn't fully recovered from last year either.

Hey, here I am. Still trying to get a grip and get out of here. All of the hoya are in the house. DH hung them from the ceiling with rebar and screw hooks. They are also in the bathtub and shower. The traffic is so bad that I am only going to be able to make a one way trip into Houston.
I sure hope this thing hits further south than expected or I will be lucky to find anything standing when we return.

Carol, it was great talking to you today. Please bust open a bottle of the Shiraz late Friday night and get me through this storm. DH says, "and don't spill a drop".

See you on the other side of the rabbit hole!

Susan

Aberdeen, NC

Susan and Dianne,
Please be safe. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Take shelter and care with this storm.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I can't believe the horror of the hurricanes this year! And coincidently - we have a baby one (Cat1) heading our way...expected to take a more northerly direction later...and miss us. But, they do have a mind of their own!!!...but 150knt winds are unbelievable....!!!! I am very glad you are getting out to higher ground.

(Susan is talking about a story I told her about going to Safeway and seeing an Australian Shiraz on sale...and less buying 6 bottles. Well...no question in my mind what to do....but when I was checking out the fellow said, "AH, you know how to go thru a storm! Every bottle of water has been sold. HELLO...we live in Hilo and it rains every night!!! A clean bucket would be easier". I wouldn't be surprised if the grocery stores don't create the storms so they can sell more! The size of the carts!!!).

Take care, Dianne - be safe!

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

Susan and Dianne please be safe! My thoughts are with you and everyone facing such storms!

Paris, TX(Zone 8a)

My thoughts and prayers are with you and all who are in harms way. I live about 100 miles NE of Dallas, so I'm in no danger, but I do have family in and around the Houston area. This is so horrible to have this happen again, in such a short amount of time.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Good point, Dianne.....now that you mention it, my DH does enjoy mowing the lawn...it relaxes him....that's probably what those folks are up to...trying to stay calm. (Sorry about that...I didn't mean to sound insensitive!)

Praying for your safety, too, Dianne.....and for that storm to at least lose strength.....I just heard on the radio that it has changed track a bit...north & east.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I am with you, Nan...sorry to have been so insensitive...but it did seem wierd. We try to mow before a lot of rain so that the gras doesn't grow too long to mow by the time we can get back to it....it just seemed a strange thing to do when the lawns would be under salt water, probably. Hopefully not.

Trelleborg, Sweden

I was just talking to Rosita today and we just can't even imagine having to take some stuff with you and leave your house and not know what you come back home to. That to me is just horrible! Hope everything is right where you left it when you get back.

LOL....about the lawn mowing thing and staying calm. Yes, I am still here. Migrating again later this afternoon to another friends house. Poor cats just got settled in and are starting to eat again. Soon I have to put them back in crates and take them for another ride. The greenhouse is what I am going to be most upset to lose. We worked so hard on it and built it with the help of friends. I only got one season out of it. We didn't have time to take the twin wall poly carbonite panels off and put them in the house the way we intended to.

Lovely Rita meter maid. Where would I be without you.. Give me a wink and make me think of you....."The Beatles" - a little hurricane humor.

Last post until after she has her way with us.

What a kick it would be to be a passenger in one of the planes that fly into the center of the hurricane to have a look. I'm sure I would be close to a heart attack. One of the pilots was on TV yesterday saying that the weather in the eye of the hurricane is beautiful and serene. They have seen birds flying around inside. Mother nature moves me....

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Watching the Wx...and thinking of all of you out there in harm's way.

I have received some incredible photos from a friend taken of Katrina...want me to post them here? Talk about power/beauty!!!

Carol,
I would love to see the pictures of Katrina, the power of that storm was unreal-- it is just all part of nature and life.
My thoughts are with those people in the south as they face another storm,

WOW, what awesome pictures !! Talk about beauty, power, and MOTHER NATURE at her best/worst depending if you are in her path.

Thanks,

Oh wow the pictures are something else. Gave me goose bumps. My heart goes out to everyone that was touched by Katrina, and now Rita moving in. Susan and Diane you are in my prayers. You know who is just an awesome person, and maybe he will bless us with a miracle, and Rita will just die down to a tropical storm tonight.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Oh my gosh....my jaw dropped.

How ominous and frightening!

Thanks for sharing these, Carol.....I've never seen anything like them.
I've seen 'somewhat simlar' photos of approaching tornadoes...(haven't experienced one yet, hope I never do!) and that mama looks *massive* compared to those....I'd have never imagined!

Where were they taken?
