Pollenating Lotus.

Bessemer City, NC(Zone 7b)

A friend gave me a nice potfull of "Sacred Hindu Lotus" which produced about a dozen blooms. Beautiful soft pink fading to white with pink tips.

I wanted to get some seeds and nice pods, but there didn't seem to be any viable pollen. I kept checking, but never found anything on the anthers.

Wha hoppened? Could insects have eaten it? I didn't see any and the anthers didn't seem to be damaged. The pods just dried up.

I've had similar problems and have not yet found anyone with enough lotus know how to answer viable seed questions..

My Empress lotus do the same thing. I get about 50 blooms per year and only about 10 of the seeds are good.

So, it's not necessarily a case of "parenting issues". ;-)
I hope we get to the bottom of this.

I have had more trouble than you can imagine getting good lotus info. Other than the basic how to pot and grow stuff...I have not been able to find anyone who knows or is willing to spend the time to enlighten me on pollination issues. Maybe you will have better luck.

Be sure to click on the link to the "1987 Chinese text" after drooling over the many cultivars pictured.
