Woohoo!!
I was checking out my Hoya nummularioides (gifted cuttings from a friend 2 yrs. ago...nice full plant now!) which is hanging outdoors in a branch of my flowering crab tree....and it's *loaded* with buds!!
I also checked out my 'tentatively ID'd' H. aff. picta....and it has *one* umbel of buds forming!
I can't believe it!
I'd take photos, but my camera and card are full of photos from a family reunion....and my camera's software gives me errors when I try to upload/download more than a few photos....so that will have to wait 'til I have time to get those out of there. Besides....my macro lens doesn't work :(
I'm worried about the nummularioides.....as I was planning to treat all the plants for bugs (as a precautionary measure before bringing them in) this weekend and then bring them indoors.
Do you think that will cause any problems in it's blooming?
The first frost 'round here isn't always forecast by the weatherman.
I'll definitely get a photo of the aff. picta when it blooms, so I can 'pin down' it's ID.
(I'm sure my terminology's not up-to-par regarding buds....but y'all know what I mean, nonetheless, I'm sure?!)
Buds forming on H. nummalarioides and possible aff. picta!
I've brought my hoyas in already. Gosh, I thought it got cold early in Wisconsin. It's still in the 80's in this part of the country but I was worried a frost would sneak up on me.
This is the first year I took mine outside for the summer and I haven't seen a bug yet on any of them. The couple that have had mealie problems seemed to shed them outside. Knock on Wood! I hope I don't have an insect infestation just for saying that. I have not sprayed them with anything. But I'm watching them carefully!
Susan
Susan...it usually *does* get cold here at night by now!
We had lows in the mid-forties just a couple of weeks ago, and I was about to bring them in, but the past week and a half have been summer again! It's 89 degrees here right now, and hasn't been much below about 55 at night.
There's a few slugs creeping around out there,(yes, even on the plants hanging in the trees!) and those funky waspy things that attach to leaves and die while laying eggs (lol! whatever they're called!) .....I've found a lot of those this year, and they seem to be very partial to they hoyas!
Way to grow, Nan! You are going to love the fragrance when your plant blooms. It sure is a nice treat for a fall bloomer!
Congratulations on the peduncles on aff. picta. Hope you can get your photos downloaded and share a picture!
Nan,
You will love the fragrance of the nummularoides. It is one of my favorite! I only wish it would bloom more then once a year.
Karen
Nan, congratulations. I'm trying to figure out where Soldier's Groove is. How far is it from Minneapolis? Maybe someday we could get together. I gauge a lot of my plants by you, same climate. I still have a couple hoyas hangin outside too. It is really hot here again today! Holding out on those two plants still outside.
Heather
Oh, goodie! Now I can't wait for the scent!
Heather....SG is about 60? mi. south of LaCrosse....we actually live west of the village itself....we're about 13 mi. from the Mississippi.
So....far enough, but then again, not too far!
We should definitely try to get together sometime!
I've a friend on another forum who lives in Lewiston, MN.... really not that far at all, and we've discussed meeting in LaCrosse, since she goes there often, but we just haven't gotten around to it!
I love to 'plant-shop' in LaCrosse, there are at least a few choices there, and I have 2 nieces and a nephew there, too, but the price of gas recently has kept me away for quite a while.....and that's hard to do, 'cuz I've heard people mention that 'coveted' plants have been available off and on at Home Depot!
BTW, Heather....all my cuttings from you are rooted and doing *fabulous*!
I've yet to pot the Pachyclada and the Carnosa, as I plan to keep them here at work....but I need to find a place for them, first....plus...I need more of those small hanging baskets!
Oops...sorry for rambling....I checked the plants again today, and not much progress....I will take photos!
Anyone know, though, how *cold* nummularioides can get? I'm still worried about bringing it in while it's forming umbels. I read that it's to get to 39 this coming Tuesday morning.....that could mean frost. NO!! If frost threatens, I can bring it onto the sun porch, I guess.
checked my nummularioides and nothing yet.. Can't wait. Poor thing has been moved around so much this year, maybe it wont bloom. I don't know how cold it can stand. 39 does seem a bit chilly though.
Just checked again yesterday....not close to blooming yet but getting there!
I'll take photos soon!
Thanks for the photo of yours, Maria....now I know what I have to look forward to!
I'd never dream of leaving it out if it does get to 39 degrees, but I think I'll bring it into the sunporch, as I do believe indoors it doesn't get as much light as it likes.
