Bug?Photo?Help?????

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

I've waited all season to have several brugs blooming at the same time. My wish came true, I have MANY blooming, but I have these horrid bugs destroying them, the minute they open. Please identify them for me and tell me what to try to get rid of them. The are very black, kinda like a cross between a worm and a gnat, they fly and are so disgusting I can hardly stand to look at them.

I have no clue. They are gross and so many of them. I would spray with some Raid fogger. I use it for UFB and find it works pretty good. My only trouble is getting back into the house holding my breath.

I bet you are so mad. They have some nerve. I am being eaten alive by baby snails.

Muskegon, MI(Zone 5a)

Oh the poor brugs....the weather here is turning cooler and my brugs are loving it..not too many bugs so I feel so bad that you guys are being eaten alive...send them all my way, I will take care of them...snickering here...Judy

Strange looking things, I would imagine if you spray the flower with anything your going to damage it. i'd watch those unopened buds though, and spray them, I don't have my brugs inside and can spray them with harsher chemicals such as malathion, which is currently going off market, or you can use the bayer insecticide , I wouldn't spray the open buds though just kind of knock the bugs off and spray the ground. I would spray the unopened buds, perhaps the spray will stick around and kill the bugs later on when the bud opens. Hope you get rid of them, I've not seen anything like those.

sorry I haven't a clue, but PLEASE do not send them this way.

Could they be thrips? Sherry, I found some info on Google by putting in black thrips, and they can be only1/8 inch long, slender, some winged, some not, and they even destroy rose blooms too.
There are many varieties of thrips out there, who knew?

Check out a few sites, and see if anything sounds familiar.
I hope you can identify and destroy!!

Thanks all!!!! Jackie, I nearly broke my neck getting a look at thrips, hoping that's what they are, but, it is not. These things look like slender, black worms but some fly (like it said about thrips) but the body does not look like thrips, these awful things don't appear to have legs - if they do, they are well hidden. I just hate them, they make me ill and I've tried lots of stuff, Raid for flying bugs, Sevin, Safer insecticidal soap, a snail/slug powder that says it kills lots of other stuff too, I tried several other things too, and it looked like they liked everything I used. I was told by a guy that works for me that they arrive every year at the same time and leave just as quickly as they showed up. I've NEVER seen these before, they are awful, and every time I go out, I pray that they have taken flight and left. I'm going to try something different tomorrow, but don't know what...I appreciate your responses...

Oh Sherry , I could just cry for you. They are awful looking.

I think you should copy this post over in the Garden Foes Forum ? http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/pad/

How terrible Sherry! I feel for you. I wish I knew what they were but I have no idea....
I would follow Scoots advise and post on the Garden Foes.

Springfield, OH(Zone 5b)

Sherry.. are they shiny like they have a hard shell? I am looking at these thinking..I have seen these before what the heck are they? Gonna go research

And do you have a better picture?

I've already posted garden foes, not identified as yet. They are difficult to photo, they are small. I'm just sick about this, my beautiful blossoms were just not meant to be. I could get over it if i could find some way to control them. This is my reply to garden foes, for more description:

I have done everything. They do not die easily and they swarm, some fly, some bite. I've tried neem, Sevin, cutter for the yard, soap does ZERO, unless it's foam and after I hold them under, one by one (slight exaggeration) they do die. Today i'm using Raid again, and going back to get more, I hate sprays. The remind me of a flea, but they do not have a hard body, I can see no feet/legs on them, they appear to crawl, when they fly, their wings look like gnats. I'm fixing to call the county extension. Thanks, if you think of anything, please advise...oh, I did soapy water in a bowl, as well as beer and wine...

Western Flower Thrips. They told me to use Orthene. What the heck is Orthene?? I'll probably have to drive to Indianapolis to find it!!!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Be prepared...it smells really bad. LOL! I ordered mine from Rosemania, but before you order, be sure to read the label they have available in PDF format. The shipping is free, but this isn't a really safe insecticide for our garden friends.

Sherry, hve you tried a systemic? I am sure you must have. Bayer , Advanced Garden 2 in 1 Systemic, Rose & Flower Care.

If you haven't tried it, do. I am sure you can get this locally. Large 5 lb blue container with a red and yellow label. Try it.

Jeanette

Jnette, is it a spray?? I really hate sprays but I did use Bayer Advanced 3 in 1 about a week or two ago. I think I have the Bayer 2 in 1, but maybe it's the one I avoid because it's a spray, I'll check. Does it say it's for Western Flower Thrips or Rove Beetles??? This is so disappointing. I'm trialing two cuttings and right when they bloom this happens. Oh, well.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

It is granules. Sherry, I just looked up the Bayer 2 in 1 systemic, for you. That is the one with fertilizer so watch out that you do not burn your brugs. I have with it.

It says it kills:
Holly Leafminers, Spider Mites, Thrips

http://www.bayeradvanced.com/garden/products/details.cfm?id=3

I hope it is really strong enough to kill thrips. They are bad. Maybe you should use the Orthene

No Sherry, it is not a spray and event tho it is granules it works rather fast. At least put some on while you are trying the sprays. I don't think it will hurt to use both. Yes, it does have a rose fertilizer with it so as Kell said don't over do it.

Thanks all!!! I have not had time to reply to anyone today, sorry. This is what I posted to Garden Foes this pm:

>>>> I've been to see three county agents and each one said a different thing, thrips, rove beetle and another beetle, I forget and they all said to use something different. So, I got in my SUV and drove over the MS river bridge to visit my garden guru, we've known each other for 43 years. He took one look and said THRIPS, and walked straight over and picked up a bottle of Thiodan to spray, and told me to use di - syston, and water it in well and spray again if I don't get them all, which I won't. My blossoms are gone, but I cannot stand these thrips. Oh, and he told me to get some Code Red Mountain Dew, and mix 4 tablespoons Thiodan per gallon, and add 1/2 can Code Red, per gallon. I thought I'd never find the Code Red, sold out every place I stopped. This guy makes his living landscaping and has an unbelievable place, and has never told me wrong. I'm going to do it when it cools off. The county agents have all called and they approved his recipe, and said that it should get the rove beetles too, should there be any. It just makes me sick to lose all these blossoms. Oh, they all agree that the first cool snap we have and these dudes will be gone. Of course that is likely a while away - last year, our first freeze was Dec 15. Thanks for your help, I'll let you know how it goes... >>>>

I'm attaching a bloom, L'Amour x EP, started feb 22/05, from Kell. She has huge FAT blooms and the first three have 6 points, she is the most delicious color ever and has thrips. I am in LOVE with her and she was 'gone', sucked dry by the horrid thrips. This is a special seedling and I sincerely appreciate your sending me the seed Kell. I also hope you will put me on your seed list this year too. Assuming I get rid of the thrips. These blasted bugs have really broken my heart.

I hope you guys like this seedling as much as I do - if you don't, today wouldn't be a good day to tell me, trying to LOL, my fuse is short over these thrips and the loss of so many buds and blooms. This photo (LAxEP/Kell), of course, is from the front, so you can see the 6 points. She is much prettier than my photos as I was racing to get to the doctor and get her meds before she was lost, but unfortunately I was too late and only have these photos. Oh, well, tomorrow is another day. Thanks to ALL of you again, I appreciate hearing from all of you, thank you so much for being there. Kell, I LOVE< LOVE this seedling, she is a beauty...

Sherry, did your guy tell you where you can get the di-syston? I think it was Judy, Jazzpunkin, that was asking, and I wrote to Bayer and asked if they sell a di-systen without the rose fertilizer. Have not heard back from them.

Jeanette

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

My guy sells Hi Yield Di Syston, it does not have fert in it, and it's granules that should be watered in. One thing the county agents and my guru agree upon is that Katrina blew the horrid bugs in. Once years ago, Betsy, I think, blew salt water on to many rice fields in my area, right at cutting time, killed the rice. Quite a coincidence, I have three first cousins in the area where Rita is expected to hit, and I have three first cousins in NO. Also I know Rj and Carter are in Houston too. I hope all are safe. Are there other DG friends in the path of Rita?? Is Susie in the area, Dee, et al???

I don't have 32 first cousins in Houston, only 3, lol.

How about tryimg Neem Oil? I have had good results with it and a hard burst of water twice a day.

For shame on Katrina. What havoc she has caused even to your house, Sherry. What a pity you wait and work all summer for them to bloom and bugs get you. You know Eva had the same problem. She struggled all summer with tons of hers and just as they were blooming, beetles moved in for the kill. Just not fair.

My sister evacuated from Metairie, next town over from New Orleans and got to Houston eventually. They just rented an apartment there trying to figure out what to do. They have their son in HS there now. Now she thinks she will be evacuated from Houston. I think they are going to leave the entire area totally as soon as they can think straight.

Sherry, your brug is just gorgeous. I love it. I can't wait to see her next year. Thanks for posting it. And thanks for growing it out. I know it was not easy.

Good luck, Sherry! Kill them dead.

I meant to post a picture of my nephew's high school in New Orleans. I do not think they will be opening for a while. All that water.

Loretta, I tried neem right off, did zero, I tried lots of stuff and was amazed that nothing I had or thought of even fazed them, they are nasty, difficult to stop bugs, but the di syston did it, immediately, without damage to the flowers, calyx or buds (I hope and pray - I do have a few buds left).

Thanks Kell, I appreciate your interest and concern. I am all 'well' today and, I realize, my problem was not a big one and not insurmountable and when/if I have future problems, I will go straight back to the guru - he's in the business of growing and selling beautiful, healthy flowers, plants, shrubs, trees, etc, and he knows the 'tricks', applicable in my area, for quick and lasting results, with the least damage to the plants, as well as the growers, animals, good bugs, wildlife, etc.

I also, Kell, appreciate your kind remarks about your seedling, I'm nutz for her, she is special, I hope she continues on the same track.

Boy, your sister and family has had a tough break, if Rita does hit the Houston area. I feel the same way with my family directly in the path of two such horrific hurricanes.
