The last 3 dogs I have had, have been Boxers. The first one we raised from a puppy, and she died very unexpectedly at age 4 from inoperable cancer. After that I went to a local rescue and got 2 adult boxers. One was diagnosed w/cancer right after we got her, but lived almost 6 years after the diagnosis .. just died in April from lymphatic cancer. The other one was diagnosed w/ cancer (mast cell tumor) in April and is on prednisone therapy. He was very depressed after his playmate died and finally seems to be adjusting. But I wouldn't mind getting another dog, to be his and my friend. But no more boxers - the whole cancer thing is too awful, and they seem to have a higher incidence of cancer than some breeds.
I would like a smaller dog and a breed that isn't predisposed to cancer or other problems (hip dysplasia, etc). One that generally is easy to housebreak, is friendly but not clingy, and not the type that needs an 8 foot fence & moat to prevent runaways. I know lots of you on this forum support rescue organizations and also getting pets from shelters. I am also considering those options. One breed that appeals to me is the mini Rat Terrier. If anyone has one and can give me inside information about them, I would appreciate it! Also, if anyone has other suggestions I'm open to hearing about them.
Thanks!
Eileen
