Hi, I'd like to introduce myself,,

nanaimo, Canada(Zone 7b)

Hi, my user name is Klinger, and real name Cindy. I live on Vancouver Island in Nanaimo.I moved here two years ago from Calgary. I really love the gardening here. I have always loved tropical type plants, and have been able to indulge myself more since moving here. I have a small green house I use for overwintering and propogating.
Some of my favorite plants are brugs, &bamboos.I grow dahlias, iris, ee, and really like trading seeds and cuttings.
I also have fun doing hypertufa and concrete creations, mosaics, and what ever else I get in the mood to make for my garden.
I have a small above ground pond, also.
It seems like everyone here is very friendly, and there are a number of other Island members.
Is there some info about posting pics I can read? I have really enjoyed looking at everyones pics.
I am glad to meet you all, Cindy

Welcome Cindy! Glad you dropped in to say hi. You'll enjoy it here in the Canadian Gardening Discussion Forum. The folks here are friendly, helpful, and supportive.

Hi Cindy! Welcome to Dave's Garden and the Canadian Gardening Forum.

First off, you're going to need to know what zone you're in - here's the link to the Canadian Plant Hardiness Zone map - http://sis.agr.gc.ca/cansis/nsdb/climate/hardiness/intro.html.

Second, pictures. Click on the "browse" button below the "your message" box at the bottom of this page, and navigate to your picture, whether on your computer, or a website. You can only have one picture per message, and you have to own the picture. It's a very simple method, not like some other gardening websites I've seen.

You're going to fit right in here with your gardening passions.

I live just east of Toronto in a townhouse and have limited space for gardens, but what I have are filled with perennials, and I fill containers with annuals on my deck. I also love tropicals, and have roughly 100 tropicals in the house.

Looking forward to seeing some pictures of your gardens!

Christine

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

Welcome to Dave's Cindy. I'm just up the road in Campbell River. I like tropicals too. I imagine you can find more things than I can with Nanaimo having so many more stores.

If you're into orchids I highly recommend the Central Vancouver Island Orchid Society. I belonged for about 4 years. I was thinking about joining again but it's an awfully long drive to go to the monthly meetings.

It must be kind of nice living in Nanaimo. It's not far to go to Victoria. I noticed in the Gardens West magazine that the Victoria Cactus and Succulent Society is having their annual fall show and sale this weekend. I would love to be able to go to things like that but it's so far to go from here.

Hi Cindy, I'm from the Ottawa Valley, but originally from the West. A lot of young lads from the Ottawa Valley went to Calgary when it was booming in '80 - '81 for jobs. In fact there were so many people from the Valley there that they used to hold huge parties in Airdrie and call them Valley Night. Anyway, that's how I met my hubby in Calgary!

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Hi Cindy,

Another one from Ottawa area. this is a great website. I look forward to meeting you in forums. My husband's cousin is a dentist in Parksville, just up the road from you. If we get out to visit, I'll look you up.

Hi Cindy
Welcome from Edmonton ! Photo's are easy even if you don't know how just give it a try and you will be fine, I did.
Oh and if you think you are posting your photo in the wrong place ......you won't be. Someone had a sense of Ha Ha and its got a funny name for the site after you put it on. I can't think exactly what it is at this second but one of the other folks will be able to let you know. It is some thing with the Canadian "eh" in it.
I will be looking for your photo's .
Ann ( the other one without an e)

Hi Cindy. Welcome to Dave's Garden. Like your handle.

Hey Cindy, I was through Nanaimo twice in the last 3 days. I'm another one that is just down the road, in Victoria. Only a few blocks from Heather. I'm also pushing my limits by trying to grow tropicals, moslty brugs, plumies and passiflower.

Nightowl has an inflo starting on her plumie, mine are sad compared tohers, but I do have a bloom spike on my Bird of Paradise...

Thanks for all your kind welcomes. I am surprised at all the islanders here.
I felt like I landed in paradise when I moved here, the zone 3 with chinooks in Calgary made gardening pretty challenging . Here I feel like there is easily twice the growing season.I started a passiflora last year, and over wintered a good bit of it in my green house, I was really surprized when more of it started to come back from the galvanized tub I had it planted in with out any overwintering protection. It has grown probably 8-10 feet but not a single flower last year or this, I don't know what I am doing wrong.
Brenda, my handle is named after a wonderful spaniel I had for 22 years, he passed away last fall.
Sandy, I do like Nanaimo, it is nice and central. I have had two orchids which I seemed to kill off with ease , :(. I work retail which means I work most weekends, that rules out a lot of gardening events, but I get the occasional Sunday off so try and do what I can.
I will try and post some pics of my garden soon, again thanks for the warm welcome,
Cindy

Welcome from another ponder Cindy and don't feel bad about your Passiflora. There are a number of them that are difficult to get to bloom. Some say don't fertilize and others say go ahead.....those that do (Tropicman is one) tend to feed one time with 20-20-20 and the next time with Bloom Booster.

The passiflora that are more floriferous here are:
P. Lavender Lady
P. Vitifolia
P. Belotti
and P. Caerula

I have about 6 other varieties that I've only seen one bloom or none at all (some I've had for 3 years).

Pam (another orchid killer......who now mainly grows the much easier Phalaenopsis....Moth Orchid)

another welcome from edmonton - your old zone. you can sympathize with our busy fall "shall i take it in, shall i let it die" activity at this time.

Langley, BC, BC(Zone 8b)

Hi Cindy from across the strait!! I grew up on the coast of BC and now live a little inland in Langley. We moved to this house three years ago from a bit further in, imagine my delight to see arbutus on each side of the drive!! Had to have it.

There is a really great mailorder nursery near here, Ferncliff Gardens specializing in dahlias, dayliliies, iris, peony. Have been buying from them for years. Heres the link http://www.ferncliffgardens.com/

their stuff is a little pricier than others, but the plants are HUGE. And a person can always visit them -- I was there to pick up irises two weeks ago and there were acres of dahlias in bloom.

I had a bit of trouble figuring out how to upload pictures too. I followed the directions, but still wouldn't work, so I experimented until I found what seemed to do it. Though I was told what i figured out didn't work; doing it is the only thing that makes uploading work for me. I can pass it on if you have problems.

I have a pond too, and love pushing the zone as far as I can with tender tropical things, or Mediterranean aromatics. love to hear more about your triumphs!
Marian
