Why do you graft?

Freeport, Bahamas(Zone 10a)

I have several varieties of plumerias, all from either seeds or cuttings that I got when I was in Hawaii on vacation. They are all growing very well and several have bloomed. I am wondering why you would graft a plumeria? Is this something I need to be thinking about doing? Any info would be appreciated!

Some varieties are very hard to root from cuttings.
Grafting those types is a better option,
Especially if they are expensive and you dont want to risk losing them to rot.
They get grafted to strong root stock so they grow better.
You may also want to graft several of your favorite varieties to one plant.
This could be planned so that at least one was in bloom all the time
Thus making a constantly blooming plumie tree.

How do you graft? If I wanted to try with a plumie that was not too spectacular that I wouldn't cry if I lost it.....how would I go about doing it?

Id love to tell you but I have been almost a complete failure at this point with grafting.
There are plenty of helps available on the web if you google grafting plumeria. ;)
Heres one link to an article by one of Plumerias leading men.
This is for patch bud grafting.

That's a great link, Michael. Thanks for posting it.

Ipakosh, I agree with what Michael said 100 percent. I would only add that sometimes, for whatever reason, you only have a little piece of a plant that is too small to root as a cutting, but it can be grafted easily. There are some great pictures here and links about grafting. I will try and find that thread for you.

Ipakosh, I have to tell you that I keep looking at your picture that you posted. That is an amazing picture. Did you take it yourself? You must be a professional photographer. That is just one of the nicest pictures that I've seen.

I wish, no it is a pic that I found.............if only my plumerias looked as nice.............or at least were blooming right now.......oh well, I will have to be patient and wait for next year!

Ah! Well, it's a great picture anyway. I hope you get flowers like it next year:-)

wow. I like the idea of having a tree w/ grafts of my faves. Two varieties, three or maybe even 4! Boy! cars would really slow down by my property, then.

Ya to take cuttings LOL!!

Nery, I agree that would be neat to see. A tree of many colors:-)

OMG, I was halfway kidding. Too cool! I guess, grafting your faves wouldn't be enough, you'd also have to consider bloom time so you could see the effect in all its splendor.
Malestrom, I wonder if that person ever posted a pix in bloom. That would be awsome
I have taken 2 grafting classes at my co. extension, bought the tools/supplies and have yet to even try. shame on me.

Thanks for posting that, Michael. I too would like to see it in bloom, but I don't think James ever posted a picture of it in bloom.

I would time the blooms so that there was always something in bloom rather than picking varieties that all bloom at the same time.
Although thats an option too! ;)

Here's kind of a neat thread on grafting for whoever is interested: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/plumeria/msg0813451629195.html
