How do you remember

Proctorville, OH(Zone 5b)

How do you remember where the bulbs are among the perennials? I am terrible at this, even tho I map it out, If I think, this would look better here, sure enough.. I go to dig & hit a bulb. Not always, but enough to make me think, Maybe I don't need anymore plants. LOL

Buy a bunch of grape hyacinths and when you plant your other bulbs, put a few grape hyacinths in with it. They will have grown some leaves by now so you know where there are bulbs. They are rather inexpensive and it will look nice having all these blue dots in the garden in early Spring.

I'm the worlds worst for this to. I use several things to remind me, but always neglect to mark something. I try to intermingle most of my spring bulbs with later blooming perennials so there is always something occupying the space (If I see soil, I dig in it!), even if it's just ground covers. I have the same problem with some late emerging perennials, so I often try to combine those with spring bulbs, then there's always something growing there to remind me.

I normally used brown mulch. when I want to mark anything, I cover the area with red mulch and then write the particulars in my journal. Any type will do, as long as the "marking" mulch is different than your regular.

I'm glad I am not the only one doing this.... i hope the suggestions keep coming... Maybe if we do 3-4,5,6 we won't dig into the bulbs!

A fellow gardening friend of mine said that she buys a sack of white pebbles & uses them to mark off where she's planted spring bulbs.

Albany, OR(Zone 8a)

Pebbles would be fine if you don't any cats in your house or neighborhood. LOL.
My cats would just push around and bury them.
I use wooden sticks from my work to mark it all. I also use the little white plastic labels too but they can get buried under the mulch at times.
I, like notmartha, take lots of pics too and refer to them at times.

I put markers in when I first plant them - just for a year or two - after that I dont bother I have so many bulbs that almost anywhere you dig they show up!
You could try putting a handful of sand over a thin layer of dirt on top of the bulbs so you will see the sand when you start to dig. I like the idea of planting a few muscari on top - they are usually putting up new growth by now so would mark spots very nicely.

Waiting for my fall bulb order to arrive and wondering where to put them!
