Bayer Advance Tree & Shrub

Hendersonville, TN

I'm treating all my hoyas and other houseplants with this stuff. I'm wondering if it's safe for African Violets as well? Anyone try it? I assume its safe for them but I don't want to take any chances.

Hi Sharon, Gee, I would be kinda afraid to use it on the tender AV's but they may be tougher than I think. Why not ask over on the AV forum? Maybe someone has had a positive experience with that. Good Luck! I know I've had mealie problems with some of my AV's.

I'm treating all my tropicals with it too....no idea how it will affect the AV's tho. Thank you Milan for sharing it with me. I'm tickled pink with the thought that my plants will be clean of pests for the first winter ever. Ü

Good suggestion Susan...I'll check at the AV forum. I asked here first because it seems to be a popular product with the hoya addicts and I know many are also addicted to many other plants as well :-)

I'm fighting an infestation of aphids! I never had them before so this is a new experience. I'm trying to wash with soap and water where I'm finding them and drenching all my plants with the Bayer. Hoping I can keep these buggers under control until the Bayer kicks in.

I'm glad you brought this subject up cause I am thinking of using it now too before I start hauling all those tender hoyas in for the winter. Do you have the dosage handy? I forget what we are supposed to use on hoyas (I know it can't be what it recommends for trees & shrubs).
Also, I wonder if it will kill scale too? I just noticed I have a bunch of strange looking scale on my paucifloria. It is strange because it is not brown like I am used to seeing. It is yellowish. However, it must be scale because it is the same little hard shells that won't come off until you scratch them off with something. (If scale is killed with the insecticide,...does it then fall off, or do you still have to scratch it off)???

Marcy, the dosage I used is 1Tbsp./gallon. The label says that it also works on scale. I've never had scale on any of my houseplants so I don't know if the scale falls off or if you have to scratch it off. I'm sure others with more experience will answer.

Edit: Uh-Oh....I was doing a search and found a thread that said use 1 oz. per gallon. Once again my memory failed me, lol! All I could find on the label was the proportion for using on trees and shrubs. Oh well....I guess I'll have to wait until the soil dries a bit and then go back and give them all another dose!

Also, I did a search on the African Violet forum and didn't see where anyone has used the Bayer Tree and Shrub on African Violets. I'm hoping someone here can give me some guidance. Otherwise, I might just try it on one of my less cherished ones, lol!

Don't forget to post on the results. Speaking of AV's my cherished ones are the variegated leaves! Love 'em.

I found the thread that was being discussed before about the Bayers Tree and Shrub spray.

Donna, do you know where we can get Bayer up here?
Christine

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

I don't know Christine. I'm going to phone and check a few places to see if we even carry it here in Canada.

You can't get BATS in Canada due to the tightening pesticide laws here.

Thanks Milan. Didn't realize it was toxic-wouldn't use it then, even if I legally could. Oh well, back to the drawing board!

Here is a link to their website. Maybe this list of stores where the product is available could be useful to someone living close to the US border.

PanamonCreel you have a dmail.

Sorry everyone to write of subject here but not sure how those dmails work.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

In Europe it is known as Provado...so perhaps it has a different name in Canada?

Celaya, Mexico(Zone 10a)

Nope Carol, it's not available for public sale here.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

You're right Milan. No one has heard of it.

Harrisburg, PA(Zone 6a)

I know this is not going to help the members that are not in the US but the product, BATS, is on sale for $9 at WalMarts'. Just info, folks.

Okay....I'm confused...lol! BATS is different than Bayers Advance?
:) Donna

Toronto, ON(Zone 6a)

BATS = Bayer Advanced™ Tree & Shrub, if I understand it well.

I wish you'd posted in the AV forum and I could have said something sooner.

The active ingredient in BATS is imidacolprid. It's the active ingredient used in some pets' flea collars.

It has been available in granular form (hard to find but findable) for a while under the brand names Marathon and Merit, and is a staple for many many AV and gesneriad growers. It keeps mealies away as well as fungus gnats out of the soil. It does NOT work on thrips and mites. I also found that it did not work on the kind of scale I had on the AVs, although I've heard people report that it works very well on orchid scale.

For the AVs, I would water it in instead of spraying it. It will be taken up with the water and be effective that way. If you have an infestation, you would want to remove as much of the adults as possible with some sort of contact killer (soap bath, neem spray etc).

From what I hear, the product is not approved for general use in Canada. Imidacloprid is relatively safe for humans, but pretty deadly to fish and aquatics (and birds, I think). But if you run a search on Canada's Ministry of Ag site, http://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/index.html you'll find some of the brand names under which it is available there (perhaps for commercial use only? I'm not sure)

Thanks Keyring for letting me know it's safe to use on my African Violets!! Now I can treat them without worrying :-)

Isn't it Bayer that puts out the systemic/fertilizer plant sticks like Jobs? I'm sure that is the same name. My sister got me some from California, and I put it in all my Hoya's about a year ago. I have had mealies on only one plant since.

Long Beach, CA

Yes, Bayer DID make those "Houseplant Spikes" that had the systemic in it as well as a little fertillizer. I used them a lot last year, however, I have not been able to find them all summer, and a friend called the company & found out they don't make them anymore. I don't know what the problem was, but it made me mad cause those things worked great and there was no fuss, no mixing, & no spilling, just stick them in the dirt...and no more bugs.
Just my luck...seems to happen to everything I find that I REALLY REALLY like, from lipsticks to hairsprays to salad dressing....& NOW THIS TOO.....they just quit making it. Ha Ha. Ah...Murphy's Law, I guess.

I think t he "key" is the main ingredient, Imidoclopr id. Look for that in your searches. I really like it... Tho I hear that when used in Greenhouses, it often disses the insects that keep the spider mites in check....

I love it....works for me.

"lipsticks to hairsprays to salad dressing" ROFL!
That's like what my mom has with restaurants etc. Every time she finds one she likes, it closes within the week.

I haven't looked for it but there is a granular form of imidacloprid available. People are telling me they found it at... I forget but it's Lowes or HD or Wally World or somewhere like that - not somewhere specialized. Granular forms can be sprinkled on the soil or mixed into the soil. (Just don't flush out the pot on each watering or you'll flush out the imidacloprid.)

Alamogordo, NM(Zone 7b)

For all of you who really liked the Bayer Advanced 2 in 1 spikes.
I sent an email to Bayer asking them if they could reformulate the ingredients in this or to start reselling this stuff. I was surpised to get this reply. So I thought I would pass this info on. This was really great stuff and so easy! Hope we can make a difference!

Oh that would be great if they would start making those again. I broke into my last pack when I brought in my H. bella a couple weeks ago. She had mealies so bad this spring, I don't want to have a repeat next spring. I also sprayed her with the Bayer Rose spray, it worked really good but I had to spray like every other day for a week to get rid of them. Then I followed up with a couple more sprays just to be sure.

We will all have to contact them.

Long Beach, CA

I used to use those spikes all the time too. Made it real simple. No mixing, no mess, just stick them down in the soil & forget about it. I really don't know why they quit making them. Also, those specified they were for HOUSEPLANTS even tho they had the very same ingredient in them that the Tree & Shrub has.
It WOULD be nice if they brought them back.
Marcy
