Is anybody else as cross as I am, about CBC staff being locked out?
I've been emailing MPs, etc etc. Driving me crazy. At least I've finally learnt how to listen to podcasts but how I miss the usual programming. Quite a few university radio stations are hosting CBCUnlocked morning shows, but that is all so far.
Would be interested to know if others at DG feel the way I do.

CBCUNLOCKED
Inanda,
I'm also very cross at them, but unlike you, I've not done much because I've been very busy. No excuse, I know, and I'll try to get some thought sent out shortly. but I do have a grant application due Friday for the Food Bank I run. Once that's done, my time gets much freer.
Ann
I certainly am very vexed, Ginny. It's quite annoying. It's been interesting, though, to see the other websites popping up with the union's side of the story. Too bad that CBC management is not keeping up the honoured tradition of reporting both sides of the story.
I have to admit that I think one thing has improved, though - the morning show. This national show is very calm, subdued, they play some music - I find it a refreshing change from the 100-miles-an-hour local morning show here in Ottawa. There's just too much info to take in, first thing in the day. I'll be disappointed to lose the lock-out version - but would trade it in a minute to get the rest of the programming back. I hope it won't be too long!
Shannon
me three (or is it four by now?)
anyway -- what is news without Peter Mansbridge???? I joked to my husband that due to the lockout they could only report on last years hurricane. but it isn't funny.
I too am enjoying (kinda) listening to reruns uninterrupted, but it is a well that will run dry without those wonderful creative cbcers we depend on.
I am inspired by your activism -- it seems possible to me that since we hire that management (via our taxes) we ought to be able to fire them; tell them that their tactics are bad management, bad publicity and just plain wrong.
Better spend this venom in the direction of my mp
M
ok
done that.
sent nasty letter to cbc at http://www.cbc.ca/contact/index.jsp where they say, btw that they are experiencing "labour difficulties"
If that doesn't send you into a tailspin...well, it is,a great jumping off place.
PeTer PeTer Peter PeTer......a two syllable news demand.
Shannon,
I need that 100-miles-an-hour local morning show. I just sleep through the stuff they've got on now when the radio turns on each morning. And no local traffic or reliable weather report. Most of the day I've got radio 2 on, but if I hear Bolero one more time I'm going to scream. They seem to have a limited list of music they play over and over and over again.
Ann
Hi Ann,
The music they're playing on both 1 and 2 is absolute dreck, isn't it!
I get my weather reports from the internet and take the traffic as it comes, so don't miss those two things - and I find that with this nice relaxed morning show my heart isn't racing all morning! So to speak. Everyone on Ottawa Morning just sounds so shrill, whereas this temporary show is nice and modulated, and calm. And they still have some good interviews. I've really been enjoying the harvest check-ups from across the country.
However - like I said, would trade it in a minute to get everyone back where they belong, in the studios and newsrooms! :-)
S.
Wishing y'all luck.....I don't get a chance to listen to CBC but DH does and I know it has made his hours upon hours of driving much more bearable (and safer). As do the talking books from the library. ;)
There is a pirate station in Vancouver now, with more to come in different cities across the country - so gossip says.
Some of the university sations have CBC hours or so on them.
The music on CBC 1 & 2 are in the main - loops I think. That is why they repeat - so I'm told.
Apparently they played NO is Sinking yesterday. Must have been on a loop. Guess they don't really look at what they ar putting on air. Duh.
You can find lots of infor if you google CBCunlocked.com or .org
I caught that NO sinking melody yesterday and had to smile. Timing is everything. Cranky yes; but have no idea what the issues are or who is being more vexing. I do know that there is always fault on both sides of any dispute (labour, love, financial, anything). Some of the reruns have been delightful - 50 tracks for one and some of the interviews that Sheila Rodgers had done. Maybe they'll have to bring back Gzowski!! if it goes much longer. I miss the traffic a lot - helps me miss grid lock. But mostly I miss the little things that CBC does to keep me in touch with my community - local and national. (Not a paper reader or a TV news watcher)
so who's chain should I yank, Ginny??
I'm a member of the musicians' union and the following text came from a leaflet that was included with our most recent newsletter -
CBC Employees Locked Out
Who are we?
We're the voices you hear on radio, the faces you see on television and the people who work behind-the-scenes. We're 5,500 reporters, technicians, producers, web journalists, on-air hosts and archivists.
Why are we on the street?
CBC management says it wants more “flexibility” to hire people on contract, rather than as permanent empIoyees. But we’re flexible enough as it is. Almost a third of people employed at the CBC work on contract or hold temporary status.
Why should you care?
Hiring people on short-term contracts rather than permanently creates a less stable work force. And that affects the programs you see and hear. It makes it difficult to provide the calibre of news and programming Canadians expect from CBC. And the corporation could lose its best and brightest. That means you get less than you should from your tax dollars.
Take Back Your CBC.
- Tell CBC management what you think of the lockout. Give your two cents by calling audience relations at 1-866-306-4636 or email President and Acting Board Chair at robert_rabinovitch@cbc.ca
- Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper.
- Lobby your politician on The Hill to pressure a quick resolution to this dispute
- Hang a sign of support fr6m your car window, your bicycle, in the window of your home or even off your back.
- Meet us on the picket line. We're on Sparks Street [for Ottawa] every weekday.

spklatt, are you going? Hope to get there myself.
Ann
I won't be able to unfortunately, Ann - but I hope to get to some other CBC-unplugged events soon! If you go I would be curious to know how it went.
Shannon
I went. It was more pep rally than concert, but did feature a number of interesting performances between the pro CBC workers' speeches. Luba Goy (who had attended Glebe Collegiate, had the overflow crowd in stitches). Lots of testamonies about the importance of the CBC and even more so the importance of contacting Paul Martin and pointing out that there have been THREE CBC lock-outs during the tenure of Rabinovitch who was appointed by the Liberal Government.
The real problem, of course, is the chronic underfunding of the CBC which has caused it to become watered down - especially CBC TV.

Another effect of the CBC lock-out -
I'm a member of the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra. It's a large and very good, community orchestra which specializes in big repertoire - Mahler, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, etc. It's also a semi-professional group in that it has a high proprotion of music teachers, serious music students, and free-lance professionals (especially in the winds). And almost everyone is a union member.
Our first concert of the season is Monday evening - Mahler's Songs of a Wayfarer and Symphony #1 (which share a lot of the same thematic material).
We receive an e-mail today asking every orchestra member to help with getting an audience out to the NAC where we perform. Without the CBC to publicize it, the advance ticket sales have been much poorer than usual.
I got to thinking of how many thousands of small arts groups there are which rely on the CBC to get their message out about their performances. This lock-out has got to end and soon.
Ann
I never watch the CBC. I'd much rather watch CTV. And I prefer to listen to local radio stations. If CBC completely disappeared from the face of the earth, I probably wouldn't even notice.
On TV I watch several different channels, when I watch TV at all. The CBC's sports coverage can't be beat (before the lock-out, that is).
With radio, I have hardly listened to any other station in the last 30 years. It's just so interesting and stimulating - and lots of local coverage too, if that's what you're after.
Ann, thanks for telling us about this concert! You have DG Mail.
It sounds like a great concert. You're right, a whole bunch of arts events are publicized through the CBC, and they must really be finding it hard now. Thanks for helping take up the slack.
Shannon
whoopee!!! there is a possible settlement. I may again be able to listen to radio while i drive.
Lets hold thumbs and hope.
Todays joke. Another Cdn garden list that I'm on, gave me a slap on the wrist for posting CBCunlocked info. Threatened to 'moderate' me. Says it was political !!! content.
Ah me. Suppose I should have mentioned how much I miss our garden programmes on CBC.
Oh yes, also told a funny (to me) joke there, which was not appreciated. Thiink I'll go over to the joke forum and put it there, if it isn't already ther.e
Inanda - need a bit of time to put it on there, before you all rush over.
Changed my mind. Decided that I shouldn't put a joke about GW the shrub - on a mainly US website.

I'm so glad a settlement is in the works, and I hope it's a good one for the union.
Interesting that you were "cautioned", Ginny. I don't think it's political at all - but rather, part of our society as a whole. Well, I'm glad we can discuss it over here.
Shannon
My radios are permanently tuned to CBC. Ive even enjoyed immensely the continuous music we've had during the lock out.(I tend to just want the musice, not a talk show ) Dont care about the TV - I dont watch it most of the summer anyway and when I do it is usually home reno/garden/cooking programs! I read a paper every morning and I dont even turn on the evening news any more - just get the headlines off the internet sites!
Evening news stresses me out enormously. It seems that in our society, "trouble" equals "newsworthy". There's very little in the way of hope or constructive suggestions. Guess those have to come from other sources.
So, they're currently analyzing and fleshing out the "memorandum of agreement" or whatever it's called ... wonder how long before our normal programs get back on the air?
At least a week or maybe 2 before things get back to 'normal' as soon as us the listeners are concerned. Remember, we don't know about all the stuff going on behind the scenes. The 5500 haven't even voted yet on if they will agree with CMG. (Am sure they will) Then you have the 300 or 400 who have new jobs. Believe me, CTV, Global, APTN, TSN, all the other channels, all the film studios have been cherry picking CBC employees for 6 long weeks. All the talk show researchers who have to drum up contacts. etc etc. Thinking here of Sounds like Canada & AIH.
Will see what happens in the next few days.
G
Productions put on hold, it will be a while -- except for hockey of course.
G
Ratification voting begins tomorrow. Thank goodness.
Has anybody heard the CMG thankyou 'public service announcements' on other stations (radio stations). Still picketing today, so coffee would be welcome for your picketers.
G
Edited to add
G&M says most CBC locked out workers will return Tuesday Oct. 11th, with some techs etc. returning earlier. NB. This does not mean that reguar programming will start then. They want to make sure they have hockey - of course.
