My feeder is running low and while at the walmart this morning I saw no hummingbird mix. So I know there has to be a way of making your own with some sugar water or something but what are the exact measurements and ingredients I would need?
Thanks!
how do I make my own food to put in the humming bird feeder?
Hello Gardening_in_Ga,
I was just reading in the local paper a reminder from the ext. office that it was time here in N.C. to take down the hummer feeders as to not to interfer with the migration. You might want to check with your local office to see if it's time in your area. Oh by the way did your nest of sparrows ever hatch or was it abandon?

I use 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. Some references say to boil it to make sure the sugar dissolves, but this isn't necessary. So, 1/4 cup of sugar will easily dissolve (with a bit of stirring) into 1 cup of water. I use regular granulated "white" sugar. You don't need to put any red coloring in it.
By the way, don't use honey instead of sugar because apparently it can grow a fungus that can kill hummingbirds. Just stick to regular sugar.
Thanks everyone....I think people here leave out their feeders till October if I am not mistaken? The little guy is sitting out there on my shephards hook where the empty feeder is right now :( I think I will fill it up part way, and then make sure when I am suppose to stop feeding.
No the nest was never being sat on and when Katrina passed over us the wind nocked the eggs all on the ground! I was upset about that. I did find 2 of the 3 eggs one was broken and the other was fine. I took the nest out of the tree and put the little egg back in it and sent it to kindergarten with my son.
Hiya Gardening_in_GA. Here a couple of sites I visited when I first started feeding the hummers around here...it can answer alot of questions you might have of does/don'ts. Hope you find these useful.
