adding a 2nd cat - size, or sex? what matters?

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

After saying a final goodbye to my wonderful old boy Casey this morning, I was searching the site of my favorite local shelter

http://www.catteam.org/house_cats.html

Bonnie and Tip have caught my eye......

(I can't bear to tell Casey's story yet. I'm a great cat lover - and Casey was my very favorite, and there is a whole in my heart, but his spirit is free from his aged body and our souls are forever connected. Go in Peace sweet boy.)

I have Lucky at home, who we think was born in Sept. and that makes him 2 this month. He is a good size cat, not huge, but good size, but he only has one rear leg, and only has 1/3 of his tail. He came here as a stray, injured as a baby, and he has done well, but Casey was a very large cat, The tallest cat I have ever known, always on the thin side (we thought he must have been part Siamese) and if he wanted to he could have beat the you know what out of Lucky.

Lucky is a very comical and very playful cat. I want another cat for me, but also for Lucky.

I have always prefered male cats to females, they seem more friendly and less aloof in general.

here comes the BUT...... Since Lucky is a Tripod..... I am wondering if I should adopt a female. Perhaps she would mature smaller, more his size, so wrestling would be more an even match..... If I were to adopt Tip, and he ended up 13 lbs to Lucky's 10.... Tip's 4 legs and full tail for balance to Lucky's 3 legs and 1/3 tail......

Most of Casey's life, I had another cat, Ellie. Ellie was a brightly patched Calico, and she was not much fun. She would play on her terms, but don't pet her, don't brush her, don't mess with her. Feed her and give her a place to lay in the sun and watch birds and that was ALL she wanted from people thank you very much. She never played with Casey. Yet, they were almost always on the bed together, or in the same room, on the couch together... but not touching.... kind of like an old married couple who never talk or touch. Thing is, Ellie was like that from the start! When Lucky came here, Casey was happy to have a play mate. I think Casey really enjoyed this last year without Ellie and with Lucky. So I want to get a friend for Lucky.

(By the way, the little kitten that someone dumped here last week has already found a home with one of my co-workers who just got another little kitten a couple weeks ago.)

So....... which is better ------ same sex, or different sex, or does it matter?

Or, in my instance, should I worry more about size? That's what I am thinking......

This is Casey on the left, and Lucky on the right.
