Gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kaleem
Patricia, that is simply gorgeous! How big are those blooms?
Jodie, they are about 5 inches across. That picture doesn't do them justice.
Pat, is this the one that hopped in your car?
Sylvia :D
Wow, what a bright color! I sure can't find things like that at my Home Depot.
:) Donna
Pat, I too found one of these a couple of weeks ago at our HD, I wasn't really looking to buy anything (yeah right!) but that big bright bloom just caught my eye and it just had to come home with me. Hubby was with me and and when he saw me hoisting this huge pot into the cart he just rolled his eyes, had to show him that bloom and he said yeah, very nice. What do they know anyways?!
I hate to be the buzz kill here in case it matters to anyone, but Home Depot and Hines nursery in Calif. have been mislabeling all of their P. Phoenicea (a.k.a. 'Ruby Glow') as Quadrangularis. I have notified Hines nursery on 2 or 3 occasions but they don't seem to care about labeling it correctly. You have a beautiful flower there but if you are expecting the large fruits that accompany the Quadrangularis, it isn't going to happen. To give you a little info about your vine, it is a late summer/fall bloomer, should withstand a little frost and has no problems with heat.

That is beautiful!! Bonnie
Mark, Thank you for the information. I noticed that they also had some labeled as Ruby Glow. I am disappointed that it isn't the Quadrangularis, but it is pretty anyway, so I am still happy.

A couple of years ago I was invited to participate in a focus group by Hines Nursery--they wanted to know what retail customers wanted and valued, etc. etc. So interesting that after 4 hours of talking, it came out that all they cared about was pushing more plants to the box stores (and for some reason they thought retail customers would have the answer!). I can't tell you how many participants talked about correct labeling and more training of box store employees so they could offer proper customer assistance. Sadly, this was NOT what they wanted to hear. Lunch offered was good, so this event wasn't a total waste of time, LOL.
Patricia, sorry to hear your vine was mislabeled, but it doesn't take away from its beauty.
Your completely right Vossner, I love the flower, so I am happy
Funny that they don't care because this is the exact problem that has led to plants being mislabeled as between Quadrangularis and Decaisneana and now it's happing again, but his time, Ruby Glow. A couple years back, logees was selling Purple Haze as Pura Vida in error. While Logee's fixed the name (Logee's is an awesome company), others refused to and now, I think it's 3 or 4 years later, I'm still finding these mismarked plants in nurseries. Nurseries seem to care even less than the wholesalers do, so it just never seems to do any good to tell them about it.

Man I'm also finding so many mislabled passiflora's at a few different stores. It is so frustrating to buy 1 you think is new to the collection only to find you bought 1 you already have:(
That has happened to me 3 times this summer alone.
I sure would like to get a cutting of that baby if you ever have 1 to spare;). I have many passiflora cuttings I can cut on for you if you'd like to trade. I'mma passiflora junkie and am always looking for a new 1, I've been looking for this 1 in particular for quite a long time.
Please feel free to email me if your interested in swapping some plants;)

To tell if it's a true P. quadrangularis, count the nectar glands on the petiole. Here is the key: http://www.passionflow.co.uk/tenpassiflora1.htm
Thanks Calla, I will do that.
I have been robbed. My 3 HDs don't have that one!! Did you get it in Pleasanton, Patricia??? I love it and your pic.
I got it here in Livermore Kell, do you want me to run down tomorrow and grab you one ?
Well after checking it's glands. It is definately Passiflora Phoenicea just like Mark
said.
Patricia
OH THANKS Patricia!! You are so nice. But I found it today. I came back to this thread to see the real name. It is a really big one. The leaves are big too. I wonder how much it wants to grow.
Patricia
That is beautiful!
~Nuts
Kell, I am not sure how much it will grow. It is suppose to be hardy in zone 9, but I am going to overwinter it in the greenhouse and put it out in the Spring. I don't think there is time enough for the roots to set in real well before our first frost.
Nuts: Thank you
JLD: I will be cutting it back late October, so if you remind me, I will send you a cutting of it.
Patricia
I wish I had more room for vines. And for everything else too. LOL. This one looks like it will be a strong climber. Where are you putting all your vines in your garden?
I am putting my passiflora's on obelisks between where I will be planting two brugs.
I don't plan to grow quite as many brugs. next year, which will give me a little bit more fence I can put vines on. I wish I had more full sun area for vine because I really love them.
So do I!! But these will need lots of room I fear. Like the Thunbergia grandiflora I planted last year. It went nuts. Grew HUGE and tried to take over my neighbors yard. I have cut it back 3 times since I planted it. I am going to have to pull it out, it just wants to be way too big for what I have room for.
Kell, I have a Blue Sky Vine that is taking over one side of my house! My passiflora X decaisneana is not quite as agressive.
Susie, Are you anywhere near where this hurricane is suppose to hit ?
Hmmmmm my blue sky vine is being very well behaved compared to both of your's. But it dies completely down in the winter and then comes back in the Spring.
Patricia
Patricia, south of the predicted eye path, we're in the yellow zone down by Mexico.
I am so relieved to hear that. I couldn't get you out of my mind all day
today.
