I couldnt help myself.......

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Yesterday was the fall Pant Share of the Hort. Society. I took 16 plants so could take 16 free but I really didnt intend to get anything. Miserable rainy day too. But I did a quick walk around and couldnt resist - Artemisia 'Oriental Limelight', Tibetan Gentian and Gentian dahurica (of which I already have 1) Then cause they were there and free to me I went back and picked up 2 more each of the gentians (for gifts she says!)
Today I was supposed to be doing a dog agility demo at a fall fair but the ground was so soggy from 48 hours of steady rain it was cancelled which meant.........I could go to the CRAGS (rock garden group) fall plant sale! What did I get you ask? Another gentian - auculus this time ( I already have 1!)
2 Hepatica nobilis, a black hondo grass and a teeny tiny hosta called Dew drop.

Somebody was selling tufa rocks but I managed to walk by the truck without buying any!

Do I have a rock garden you ask ? No!

Ah well there is still lots of room

Sounds like you scored great fancyvan! Congrats on your new additions.

Hi my mom was at a plant sale in springbank was that the one you were at? She is a memeber of their Hort society and pots up babies from her yard every year.

Hi Ann: no I didnt know about the Springbank one. Lots of communities do it now. The Calgary Hort. Society has it by their office off McLeod Trail SW I actually had 2 to go to on Sat morning - one was for City Park volunteers.

You sound like my kind of shopper/gardener, fancyvan. You may as well keep them all. A group of three gentians will look more impressive anyway. Now I have to try the Tibetan ones.

I'm saving up plants for a rock garden too. Hopefully it will get done next year.

Keep an eye on that Limelight though, I saw what it can do, last year in our park.

Echoes - thanks for the warning about Limelight - I read somewhere that it can be invasive. i really like to get plants with variegated foliage. Heres a pic of the Tibetian gentian.

Very nice. I did a google image search on them and the colours vary. I'll try to get some seeds for them sometime. I started some of the dahuricas this year and have had septemfida lagodechiana for a couple of years from seed. They are really blue. Nice to know of another one for our zone challenge.
