How long til they bloom?

Mt Zion, IL(Zone 5b)

Hi all! I've been watching/reading the hoya threads for a while but haven't posted before so this is my first. I have a couple hoyas that I've had for probably 4 or 5 years and I see BLOOMS for the first time! I'm sooo excited!!!! But how long do I have to wait for them to fully develop?! I check them every day and I swear, I don't think there has been any change since the day I discovered them about 2 weeks ago. Is this a long, lengthy process or is this just a case of "a watched pot never boils" and I'm being too impatient? Here is a picture of my biggest plant:

...and here is a picture of my 'rope' hoya...that has never bloomed in the 4 or 5 years I've had it. I recently took cuttings from it and repotted it - - with that inspire it to bloom? Any suggestions on how to get the silly thing to bloom?
THANKS!!

Hi Betsy....
Beautiful hoyas you have there. I love that pedestal with the high tower support.
As far as the bloom, it looks to me that is just the peduncle that holds the blooms. That is the first things that form & then later when it is ready to bloom, it will swell up & get little green things on the end of that. Those will be the start of the flowers. When the flowers fall off, that peduncle will remain for future flowers.
It does seem to have taken a long time for that to form. Usually under good conditions, they will bloom within a couple of years. A lot of conditions affect wheather it is happy enough to bloom however. Is it getting enough light? How much do you water/fertilize? How humid is it there? Things like that.
Maybe you could tell us a little more of the conditions.

BetsyJ - Welcome! I find the two hoyas you speak of difficult to flower...they are very very slow, at least for me. I do find that stressing them is bound to produce flower...but you have two starting so I wouldn't worry. Keep the plant well watered while it is producing flowers.... Good Growing!!

Marcy & AlohaHoya ~
I must admit that I kind of neglected these poor guys the first couple years I had them. =( My bad. LOL But this year I was bound & determined to take proper care & get some blooms. Back in May, I moved them out onto my screened-in porch (facing east) and decided to repot them. Found the tri-colored one (not familiar with names but would love to know if you can tell me!) was so root-bound that there was practically no soil left! (again, my bad!). So I separated the mother plant into three smaller plants ~ 2 went into 6" hanging baskets & the biggest went into the planter with the wrought-iron tower. Needless to say, they took off & have grown like crazy! With the bloom spurs (or peduncles), I'd say that was the right thing to do, no?! ha ha I also repotted the Hindu rope hoya,~ some of the vines were 4 feet long so I cut them & have new starts growing....but haven't noticed any peduncles yet. From what you've both said, I guess I'm on the right track ...just need to be patient.....and keep them well watered. THANKS!!
OH! And I found another new peduncle today!! (see photo)

Betsy, the plant in the first and last post is a Hoya Carnosa Rubra or Krimson Princess. You'll just love the flowers, but you may have to wait for spring to see them. Here's a picture of mine with its very first flowers, which took about 4 years.

Christine:
OH MY! This is GORGEOUS!!! I hope the blooms on my plant are as PERTY! lol Will I know by the blooms whether it's Hoya Carnosa Rubra or Krimson Princess? Once they appear, I can check PlantFiles.
But I sure hope I don't have to wait til SPRING for them to bloom!!!
=( Do you really think so? The penducle appears that far in advance? Gee, that's not very nice of Mother Nature - - get me all excited about blooms that I won't see for another 6 months! LOL!

Sorry Betsy, I meant that the plant is known by either name - Hoya Carnosa Rubra IS Krimson Princess Hoya .

I've had hoyas bloom for the first time in August, in April, in June, but never later in the year than August. Hopefully yours will be different!!

Good luck!
