Gourd, when you plant the Devil's claw seeds carefully slice the black outer seed coat completely away and plant the white inside part. The coating is like leather and I found this is the only way they can germinate for me.
The dogs chewed up my only plant this year. Sigh. Oh the joys of having those four legged creatures to keep me on my toes.
Tubss5 sent you mail.l
rh3708 - sent you mail..
Windy,
Thanks for the info on these seeds, hopefuly I can work out a trade and get some here. Did you start them inside, then transplant?
I just plant them out where they are to grow in the spring. They grow pretty slowly until the weather gets hot, then they grow like a weed.
I can't start things indoors, but you could probably if you wanted to. They are a sprawling plant sort of like a pumpkin that spreads out and lays on the ground. I don't know if you could gwet them to climb..
Devil's Claw! We call them weeds here in Kansas......or are there different varieties? Janetlee50
Hey Janetlee50,
They might be weeds for all I know.. but, you can use the dried pods on your gourd projects... Can you get your hands on some seeds? or better yet, pods..
How are you doing??
Gourd, I have some seed from a palmate leaf morning glory I got from JLHudson. The vine is really vigorous. It has tiny white flowers similar to the white cypress vine. The seeds are shaped like morning glory seed but are gray. When I got them, I thought they were mildewed, but the seed is actually that color when ripe.
If you want some I have a few now, but can get more later when the plant's seed pods ripen more. Do you have other seed than the passifloras? I could use something drought tolerant that blooms this time of year.
Hi Windy,
I have lots of Gallardia Fanfare, but that does take sowing this year to get plants next year... I really like it, don't know if you can see it here in the cactus garden. Also some other mgs. I may already have the one you are talking about, I. Magnusiana, small white flowers..
I am growing from one extreme to the other... Cactus, Cactus and more cactus, then you turn around and see several containers with tons of vines and MGs.. I feel like we are in a black hole here and don't know whether to stick with cactus or tropicals..
I have some silky feather grass with seeds on it and some pampas grass blooming now, will check to see if I find seeds on those.. Those are pretty drought tolerant too. Also have something called broom, it blooms yellow spikes of flowers, that may have some seeds will check that out too..
Let me know which you may want.
Here's my pride and joy that you sent me a couple of years ago. The birds eat almost all the seeds, so I usually do not get any.
Antoinette,
I bet all I have to do is take a walk in my wheat stubble field that is right behind us....I'll let you know if I make it out alive or not. Those devil's claw cling to your jeans and won't let go...dogs sometimes have quite a time with them also.....Good to hear from you too....Janetlee
Janetlee,
lolol.. if you are not back by tonight, gonna send out the search party for you..
Antoinette
Now would that search party be for ME or the DEVILS CLAWS? LOL Janetlee
So, have you been out hunting for me....the devil's claw are just now drying....how many of them do you want? I have lots of lil elves hunting the country side so , I know that I can get as many as you want. Just let me know....I was surprized that the flower was that pretty......Janetlee
Whoa... that's great.. a couple of dozen if you dont' mind.. Let me know what the elves, might like in way of trade.. I really appreciate it. How did your Gourds do this year?
Glad you made it back from the fields alive, did they already have the claw pods on them? YOu need to collect as many of those pods as possible and trade them in the Gourd forums for stuff or trade to the Arts and Craft boards....
The green outer cover will fall off and they will dry easier that way. They will start splitting when they are dry enough to use. When I had them you have to watch out for that little tip as it will grab and rip you.No wonder they are called devil's claws!
My first elf brought in 12 that are dried and are brown and split into the claw...is that what you want? Thanks Windy for info......OK will post when you have all you want and I see how good those elves really are....Janetlee
Hi Janet,
Looking for seeds of these devils, about 12 seeds if that is alright..lolo.. hopefully there are some in the claw pods.. I wonder how well they would do here in this climate? I also like the flower.
Antoinette
Hey Janette I would like some of those also.. I can send you sase if you dont see anything on my list..
Vicki
Sure
Just tell me how many you want Vicki......I'll look at tyour list later...Janetlee
The claws are used as eyelashes and also mustaches on the Gourd Masks.. one lady used them as hair on one. I have not got the talent to do those, maybe soon..
Janet, sent you d-mail.
The seeds are inside the claw itself. They are pretty hard to extract also. I used an ice pick to pry the thing open that holds them in the pod. It is sort of a flap and when they are dry it is very hard to open. There are other seeds outside the flap that just lay there and are pretty easy to get out. But being the seed picker I am, I try to get every last one of them. LOL So Antoinette, I bet there are lots of seeds hiding in the claws.
Janetlee
Maybe a dozen or so will be good,,,, Thanks a bunch.
vicki
