My dog and those three yappy puffballs next door are always barking at each other. My thinking is, if I can get some fast growing shrubs or bushes planted, that soon they wouldn't be able to see each other!
Any suggestions for something that would fit the bill (as well as survive in our climate)?
Fast/Thick Growing Shrubs or Bushes
Nicholejean, welcome to DG and the Texas Gardening Forum! I'm sure you will get lots of suggestions but thought I would help by asking about conditions such as sun/shade, amount of water, etc.
Terrie
Terrie - most of my yard (especially along this fence) has full sun, depending on time of day. Water . . . hmm, I try not to hold my breath for rain . . . will come from either sprinklers or soaker hoses.
Well, obviously it must be something evergreen so it works all year. What kind of fence between you and the neighbor and how tall? I know your question is about shrubs but any interest in evergreen vines, such as Confederate (Star) or Carolina Jasmine? They are fast growers and with water and fertilizer will cover solid in a couple of years. :-)
The fence is about 5' tall - it's one of those waffle type fences - weaving. I didn't think of an evergreen vine! That would work too!
I'll have to look into those!
Trunnels' suggestion is a good one. Evergreen vines take up less space outward than shrubs would and provide coverage at ground level on up. The blossoms are an added bonus.
Hope you also got some rain - little shower yesterday and a good soaker this morning...very welcome it was, too. Yuska
Yes, it's very nice . . keeping me from puttering outside, though.
I "third" that suggestion of the vines. As Yuska said, they will take up less space since they grow upwards. Evergreens would be great, and you might consider some natives, as they are especially suited to our tough conditions. Here is the link to the thread of Texas Native vines: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/529381/
Just check which ones are evergreen. Most of the entries (if not all) say whether they are, and/or have links to the plant on PlantFiles. Cross vine is one I'm familiar with. I'm sure htop or Yuska can tell you what they've had success with in San Antonio.
maggiemoo - thanks for that link! The first pictures on there are of frostweed's Cross Vine (Bignonia capreolata). Fell in love! I asked both htop and Yuska if they had any experience with them - neither had grown them before, but were interested in them.
So, I called a few nurseries here in town (close by, anyway!). Rainbow Gardens on Thousand Oaks have them for $6.99/gallon. The Calloway's on Pat Booker Road wouldn't have any until spring (too bad - they're having a 50% sale!).
After we dropped Russell off at daycare (very first afternoon!), DH drove me up to Rainbow Gardens and I got two Cross Vines. Apparently, they come in a white/red combination as well as the yellow/red. The two that I got didn't have tags, so it will be a total suprise as to what colors I get!
Good going! Be sure to keep us posted on how they do, take pictures!
