Would love some Calla Lily Seeds

Alpharetta, GA(Zone 7b)

Would love some Calla Lily Seeds. My trade list is on my member page. Thank you!

Albany, OR(Zone 8a)

I am about to dig up some actual calla lilies tomorrow hopefully. They are white ones. Have too many of them in the small area in the shade.
Would you rather have the actual plants? See the picture. They are more or less on the right in the back.
Let me know.

Hey Carol I can't tell .. how many to trade? I would really like to trade at least 10+ plants. Anything else to trade? All mine are listed in my member page. Thanks.

Albany, OR(Zone 8a)

I just dug up today the other side of this bed. Have a bunch of small plants of the calla lilies from that bed. Hope to get this bed in the picture tomorrow which the plants are bigger. The plants in the picture are the heart shape leaves all along the wall of the house. There will be more than 10+ plants to ship. Actually, they will fill up a $7.70 flat rate box, no problem.
So just let me know. If this isn't acceptable, no big deal. I will just give them to the neighbor.
Carol

Alpharetta, GA(Zone 7b)

Hmm are u thinking of trade or postage? I would like to trade for something rather than send postage. Do I have anything you like (on my member page). If not .. I'll keep looking for the seeds, they are amazing easy to germinate. Thanks.

Celina, TN(Zone 6b)

DR,
Are you digging them up to store for the winter? If so how do you store them? I got two in a trade and was wondering how to keep them. I don't think they are hardy in my zone.
Winnie

Albany, OR(Zone 8a)

farmerpickle,
They are all dug up and ready to go. See pic. Your Hardy Blue Plumbago Ceratostisma plumbaginoides and Hardy Geranium Cantabrigiense 'Biokovo' sound interesting.
But please let me know today if possible. Would like to get these on into the mail. If you don't want them, that is fine and I will put them on the Plant Trading Forum then.
Thanks, Carol

No, winnietn,
I am digging them because the spot they were in was too crowded. I bet you could just mulch them good and they will come back.

I've had them nearly a month and they are still drying. Is it too late to put them in the ground now?
Winnie

Albany, OR(Zone 8a)

My neighbor (who just leaves plants at time sitting for months and then plants them) had some last year that just sat for months on the ground and they survived.
If it were me, I would either pot them up or put them in the ground. To me, they are very, very hardy and come up anytime here. Just my 2 cents tho.
Carol

Celina, TN(Zone 6b)

Thanks I think I will take a chance and put them in the ground.

I didn't know you could collect Calla Lily seeds. How do you do it? I have some gorgeous ones, but now I can't remember which ones were which. I just dig up the bulbs every year. LMK and I'll save seeds from now on and maybe I can trade later. Thanks!

Celina, TN(Zone 6b)

Pollyanna,
What color are your calla's? I just got thru putiing my two in the ground and come back and see your post. We are in the same zone. Now I'm wondering if I should go and dig them back up.LOL

I have some that have spotted leaves and white flowers. The seeds are ripening or in Spring I will (I am SURE) have more babies to share!! Bonnie

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Sounds great, let me know...I would love some of your seeds to Servants_heart...The spotted ones are so beautiful! I have a lot of seeds as welll, mine are the white as well as several pink ones, with the taller bladed leaves.

Alpharetta, GA(Zone 7b)

Hi pollyanna0102 this is a good time to go check your calla lily. I really don't do anything with them they pollinate themselves. I just keep an eye on the dead flower, when it's starting to turn brown, I pick it. Sometime the seeds are still not dried but if you wait till they dry you might just lost them. They are good size. Once I pick them I leave the seed in pot untill natually turn brown. Hope you can find some. Thanks for reply!

Laurens, SC(Zone 8a)

How will I know when the seeds are ready??? Never had seeds before--this is the first full year with Calla Lily for me!! Thanks!! Bonnie

Abbottstown, PA(Zone 6a)

I would love to trade for some callas also,,

Winnietn, I had a gorgeous yellow one and a white one and one they called fire that came out a firey orange and then one I called lavender, but my grandaughter called pink. I just love these things. They kept blooming and blooming. As soon as one would die, another flower shoot would come up. I might have lost the seeds from this year's group of them, but I'll be sure to collect them next year. My flowers are all gone now. I've seen what I call seed pods, but I never knew you could collect the seeds from them and do any good with them. Now I know!

Royalla, Australia

Hi Farmer Pickle,

I am an Australian farmer living in Australia of course. I have some white and yellow calla seed only problem is though that I mixed the lot together when I put the seeds away last season. I am looking for other varieties from US and have a friend who is growing some bulbs for me in America in his own nursery and has been sending me seed as it is available. I would be most happy to trade you some mixed white and yellow calla seed for any other varieties that I can not get here in Australia. I do not yet know how to use the Daves Garden website, I signed for membership but need to learn the ropes now. Hopefully if you responde I will be able to find it. hahaha. Cheers Windale

Farmer pickle,

How do I germinate these seed more succesfully. I am in Australia and having a huge problem with germination. I have tried using vermiculite without success and have also tried a coconut fibre available here in Australia, still with no luck. At the present time I have got some seed in a container with a tissue that has water saturating the seed, and I think that they are now opening. I am trying desperately to grow new varieties from seed that are not available within Australia. A friend of mine in USA is growing them and then sending me the seed, but at the moment I feel like our success rate for this has been very, very, poor. I am not sure how to use this site very well as only just joined, but hopefully should be able to find my back to this forum.

Your help would be invaluable to my friend and I at the moment as I am now starting to go stir crazy watching for any changes with the seed.

Thankyou for any help you are able to provide. Also just to be sure, when my calla have died and I remove the seed pod, I am supposed to take the seed out of the hull? This is what another grower told me here in Australia are they correct or am I supposed to let it dry in the hull?
Windale

Alpharetta, GA(Zone 7b)

Hi Windale, oh dear I'm no expert on cally germination. It may just been the cultivar I grow was easy. But all I did was put them in potting soil / miracle grow brand and left outside in August under my bush so they get about late afternoon sun. The seeds are even from my call lily last year and still germinated and grow nicely. I let the hull turn brown, and pick them before all the seeds dry (or I'll loost them). They I left them dry by seperating them out of the hull in the house.

Hi Farmerpickle, it is 11.30pm here so my brain has gone to mush. I can't believe how lucky you are that the calla are just growing in the way you described. Don't I wish it was that easy for me here. Possibly may have something to do with climatic difference, I live almost on top of the snow so our winds and frosts are terrible. I will keep trying to get them to grow as Australia has a limited variety available here for people to purchase so I am trying the only way I can to get new varieties growing in Australia. I have a growing contract here with a major distributor so have been able to get these bulbs quiet easily and grow them on or sell them, I use ebay Australia to do this as these are so hard for people to come by. I also grow clivia which have to be sheltered so much from the frost. I am interested in any types of calla that we can not get here in Australia and I am able to trade for white or yellow calla seed or bergonia seed even some Australian natives - very drought tolerant. If you are interested in letting me know which calla you have and if there are any seed I have for trade I would be happy to take this further with you. Thankyou for the info on getting the seed I have been doing it correctly. Cheers Windale

West Portsmouth, OH(Zone 6a)

farmerpickle, I found two seed heads out of 7 calla lily plants.:o(. I put zip-lock bags on them to save them so I could ask you this. Do I cut them off now, before they turn brown? The flowers died a long time ago.

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

I have had a lot of luck with them "not being dried" I just peel the pod open and shell the seeds, like peas. I then place the green seeds in moist soil, either in pots or in the garden where I want them to grow. They always root and grow this way for me. I haven't tried planting the dried ones, but I am sure they do just as well. I know here they are hardy, but you may want to do yours in peat block or just in moist soil in a sunny, but protected area...

Laurens, SC(Zone 8a)

JanetS---So the green seeds you can see inside of what looks like a folded leaf are ready to grow even while still green?? If so, then mine are ready!!!

Bonnie

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

That is the way I have had a lot of luck with them, the first ones were by mistake...LOL I shelled the seeds and noticed they had what looks like a little root on them...I placed them in a ziplock bag with a little vermiculite (for planting later) and in just a few day the were srouting...so now I just shell them out where I want them and cover them and they take off. I have also noticed that where they are "dumped into the soil" byt the plants themselves, I have tons of little seedlings...they are not hard to grow at all. Try some green and let some dry out and see what you have the most luck with..I always opt for the easier methods...

West Portsmouth, OH(Zone 6a)

It's worth a try even up here in OH. I can't lose anymore than I have since I'm saving the bulb, anyway.

Laurens, SC(Zone 8a)

Ok-JanetS!! You wanted some, right??

farmerpickle--did you want to try a couple of mine??

What colors do you two have?? Maybe I can trade mine for yours?? LMK!! Bonnie

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

I have a solid white with the straight green leaves as well as a pink with the solid straight green leaves. Here is a picture of the pink. Some of them have crossed and have white with pink around the edges, so I won't know which is which until they bloom again, but I can send you some seed or seedling of them. LMK

Hi JanetS, I am windale in Australia. If you have any seed of the white or the mixed pink white I would be happy to trade a calla lily bulb with you called Neroli, or Hot Pink. If you are in US I am able to post bulbs to you in your country but I am unable to accept bulbs into mine so would be happy to trade for seed of yours. To send you a bulb in US normally costs me about $8.50 so if you would be happy to pay postage on your end I will pay postage on my end so that we can trade with one another. Let me know what you think. Cheers Windale
I have placed a photo of neroli on for you so that you know what it looks like. If anyone else along the thread would like to purchase these I have a paypal account so that you are able to pay for them via credit card on a secure line. I normally sell these types of bulbs for $9.50 each Australian Dollars. Just let me know by sending a D-mail

Windale--do you have seeds for that?? I have the white calla lily with spotted leaves. Very nice!!

JanetS--the pink or pink and white would be great--your choice which to send me. How many seeds do you want?? Haven't heard back from farmerpickle yet so don't know if she even wants any?!!

Bonnie

Royalla, Australia

Hi Servants-heart,

No seed until hopefully our coming summer. I can though trade or sell to you this variety as long as you are in USA.

Cheers
Windale

Laurens, SC(Zone 8a)

windale--Well, I don't have $10 for postage for your bulbs but if Farmerpickle doesn't want my seeds--which I have not heard a reply from her yet and/or pollyanna0102 doesn't want to trade I can send them to you for whatever you want to trade or whatever. I only have a few of the one kind right now--white flower with spotted leaves--spotted with white spots. They get very tall and are just gorgeous!! Especially considering I bought the bulbs from a Wal-Mart last year and they were severely shriveled and prune looking!! hehehe They spread quite a bit and I had several plants from the 3-4 shriveled bulbs I started with!!

Alpharetta, GA(Zone 7b)

Hi Bonnie, sorry I haven't check my mail for a while but just replied you.

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Windale,
The Callas I have available are shown above..I would love one of the Neroli bulbs. Let me know.
Janet

Royalla, Australia

Hi JanetS,

I am happy to pay postage from my end to send you one of these bulbs if you are happy to pay postage of seed from your end. I think that that sounds fair.

Please send me a d-mail and let me know what yoiu would like to do and we can get underway. I have just traded some seed with a chap from Pakistan and we agreed on 15 seeds per bulb.

Cheers
Theresa Windale
