Do I still feed? Overwinter ??'s as well as cutting list.

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

How long do I keep fertilizing my brugs for? We don't usually get our first frost until toward the end of October, but it's getting dark earlier and earlier. Temps are still in the 50's.

As far as bringing them in, I have space in the basement to overwinter about 10 or 15 and the average temp will be around 60ish. I'm planning to put in some flourescent lights, but there are virtually no windows to allow natural light in. Am I asking for trouble? I'm planning to take cuttings from my favorites and use a bubbler in case I kill them.

Also, if anyone wants a piece of my Jamaican Yellow, I'll gladly send it for postage. By piece, we're talking I'm going to hack off the top 18 - 24" (which has at least 4 Y's). It smells like my CG (which is great), but doesn't bloom nearly as prolifically.

I'll also have several cuttings of Charles Grimaldi for either trade or postage. My largest plant is at least 4ft tall and wide. All cuttings will be from sections above the main Y. I think I'll probably have one or two of "Pink Favorite" and a couple from "Frosty Pink" as well. What I'd really like is to get my hands on a cutting of "Whiskers", "Creamsickle" , "L'Amour" or others are welcome too!

Emily,

I have Creamsickle. Would like to trade for Jamaican Yellow. Cutting would be from above the 'Y'.

Hi Emily,
In years past my last feeding is about this time of year. I believe this weekend will be my last fertilizing of the brugs.
We usually get our first frost about mid October and I bring them indoors and place them in the basement. The room I have usually is about 45-50 degrees and one small window. They will get watered about one time a month and go semi dormant.
Before bringing them indoors I will also remove some of the top soil from them. I then spray the soil with some insecticide and put a layer of sand on top. It seems to help eliminate some of the pests in my opinion. Also from past experience it's best to remove the leaves. I have left some on before and Wow what an invasion of pests I had.
Good luck. Hope this helps some.

Kin, what kind of insecticide do you put on your soil?....and what kind of sand?..my mistake last year is I had a few brugs blooming when I brought them in...I hadnt seen their bloom before so let them grow....I had a big aphid problem last year...

Judy, I use ortho brand. I have also used insecticidal soap. I use the kids play sand I buy at Walmart. It says it's clean and ready for use in childrens sand play boxes.
I don't know if you really need to use sand but I heard in the past that the gnats don't like it. Thats why I used it.

I had to bring some of them indoors last year that still had blooms. I just couldn't bare to cut them off. OF course the insects followed. I won't ever be doing that again. Chop Chop Cut Cut before they come indoors this year.

Kin, when do you usually bring your brugs indoors?

emilyrasmus,

Thank you for starting such an interesting and informative thread. It's a big help to newbies like me. I did send you a D-mail about one of your cuttings.

As far as cuttings, I still have a few CG's, a couple Pink Favorites and a couple from Frosty Pink left.

All I will have left of Jamacian Yellow is the bottom 3 ft. If anyone wants part (or all of it), I'll be happy to send it out for postage or trade.

Emily, I watch the weather closely. I bring them indoors just before they predict our first frost. I would say that is usually by the second week in October.
Not much longer till the Big Brug Migration to the Basement! LOL

I wonder how dormant mine will go with flourescent lights and temps in the upper 50's. Do you repot yours into smaller containers or just haul the entire thing in? My brugs are enjoying this cooler weather and some have bloomed for the first time in the last few days with many others loaded with buds. Of course, CG is a blooming maniac!

I will take whatever cuttings you have for postage.

Cuttings still available:

3 or 4 Pink Favorite (would really love a cutting of Whiskers)
Many Insignis Gold
1 Jamacian Yellow -- cutting will be below the Y as the only piece left is a "sucker".
3 Frosty Pink
1 Cotton Candy (prefer to trade for this one as well. Any doubles or brugs with long tendrils would be wonderful)

Let me know if interested :)

Elva, you have d-mail :)

Ericmn, look at Kin and Emily's zones. They are near the coast and in zone 8. You are in a much colder zone so you really cannot do what they do. Yours will have to be winterized much earlier than theirs I would think.

I am in zone 5 in Washington and I had 29 degrees last night. My brugs didn't seem to mind 'cause like one of you said, they kind of like that cooler weather. I think the bugs leave them alone. LOL But, I don't think they will stand that for long.

That's why the "bubbler" is such a fantastic idea. That way they can go from the package and into the bubbler until next spring. I'll have all of my brugs inside no later than Oct 15th.

All cuttings are taken. I will post again if I have extras.

Jeanette,

Good point, thank you. So far, our night temps are staying in the 50's, but that can't hold out for long. It will soon be time to bring all of my tender plants indoors for the winter.

Erick
