Hoyas (other than Eriostemmas) and calcium

London, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Hi everyone,

Apart from the Eriostemmas, I have read that Hoyas: imperialis, cummingiana, albiflora and calycina prefer crushed coral or ground limestone in their soil mix. Has anyone had any experience growing these species in this mix, and if so, do you have any views on whether it actually does improve their growth?

Thanks

I have read that Michael Miyashiro recommended crushed coral for H. imperialis...the others? Not sure...would love to know what others have read.

Dale's book, "The World of Hoyas" lists several species that he states "are found growing in calcareous soils" and might benifit from adding some calcium in the form of egg shells or crushed oyster shells. A couple off hand he mentions are: H. mindorenses, H. macrophylla, and H. Imperialis. There may be more, but those are just some I recall reading.
Some people have been getting crushed coral from pet stores and adding a bit to the bottom of the pots of certain ones, but I have not heard back any reports on how those are doing, or which ones specifically were tried.
Maybe someone else can report on these findings.
Marcy
