Here is the cocoon that I had put in a jar, but yesterday I put it in a clay saucer and this morning a pretty butterfly. What a wonderful surprise.
Ginny you were right when you said in a day or 2 it would hatch, and the other one on the lily stem is just turning colour so you can see it wings, so I will have 2 pretty butterflies flying around my garden.
Wilma
Today's new hatching
What a wonderful surprise indeed, Wilma. Are they monarchs? and won't they be heading south soon?
Joan
Yes they are monarch butterflies this one is just sunning herself on a gernaruim plant, guess storing up energy for the long flight home
Wilma
That's really cool Wilma. It's a good thing you have the cocoons and not me. I thought the butterfly season was over and that anything in a cocoon at this point in time wouldn't be hatching until the spring so they'd be hatching inside the jar.
Sandy
are you sure that is a monarch and not a painted lady??
It can be difficult to tell the monarchs from the painted ladys.
Joan
it really doesn't matter to me what butterfly it is,
as long as it is fluttering around in my garden is all I care about.
Wilma
It actually probably is a painted lady because the chrysalis was slightly diff. from the monarch. Gold dots. But both really beautiful. When I saw it yesterday you could see the wing pattern through the casing. What a miracle they are.
funny thing is, thought the caterpillar was a monarch. Now I'm waiting for mine to hatch. Hatchlings Wilma, good word for them.
Well, if baby puffins are pufflings, think that newborn flutterbies can be hatchlings.
G, trying to stop thinking about LA.
well my butterfly flew away but hope to return another day
hope your cocoon opens soon too, still waiting for the other one to open I could see the wings so guess in a few days it will happen,,
Ginny I too can't stop thinking about NO, so very sad.
Wilma
