Hi ya'll,
My pond was damaged by the hurricane. My fish are on the top of the water gasping for air. I have never had to have air pumping in the pond because it is big and I have lots of plant life in the pond. This is the first time I've ever seen the fish gasping.
Can anyone give me any clues why this is happening? I suppose I should be pumping air in the pond now, but why are they gasping?
thanks for any info!

maybe too much salt got in the from the hurricane?
that could be it, I do know all my plants are dying from that very reason, didn't even think that of the fish...
Does sound like lack of oxygen.
Have you had a pump or filter running, and is it running now?
Is there debris or particles in the water that could be clogging gills, making it harder to breathe? Debris on the bottom of the pond that is stealing oxygen as it breaks down?
Did you lose plants that were previously helping to filter your water?
Just a couple of ideas for you. Hope they do okay.
I just called the local pet center..they said that lots of yuckies came in with the rain, including salt..this caused the ph to get wacky. I will run a water sample and something as easy as trying to correct the ph should help out.
Thanks for reading,
lisa
Maybe a partial water change if good quality water is available.
..maybe a new state for us to live would be better ;-).
House down the street from me is for sale, but I don't think they have a pond and we don't allow pigs. :(
thats ok, I'm too thin blooded to live pass TN..lol, we would freeze in MI...
Yeah, if you got salt and other "yuckies" (man, haven't heard that technical term used properly in quite some time) I'd strongly suggest a water change (perhaps 25% or more). I hope that is the worst of the damage you've sustained..... man, what a mess this monster storm created, huh?
you like that tech. term don't cha!
sadly, no, the fish aren't the only damage. A part of our business most likely will cease. We have an 800lb sign sitting on top of our plant stock plants. Plants are dying due to salt water mixed in the rain and we couldn't water the stock for a couple of days after the hurricane. But we will be okay. We are better than most, so I try not to complain :-)
Why yes, yes I do! :o)
Man .... sorry to hear about the excess damage. I hear ya (and appeciate) on your tone about putting things into perspective. Although I don't mean to imply that this fits your situation, but a phrase I've made a part of my thinking and dialog has been, "Wose things have happened to better people." Of course, the situations surrounding my life at the time I came up with that were ... well ... odd. :o) No matter how bizarre or seemingly tragic my circumstances of the past however many decades have been, I've always had to stand aside from my emotions and realize that so many people have had things so much worse.
Really glad to hear that you are alright ... and even happier that you haven't given in to the evil demons of discontent and complaint! :o)
ok, I admit, I wallowed one day..but only for a little while... :-)shhh, don't tell anyone. I was sad about the whole over all picture here. Had a lot to do with what I saw. A lot of hurt in the shelters here, then that made me put things in perspective. We still have a roof over our head and yes, I've seen some really good results come out of ridiculously bizarre things in my life. So, with that said, I know it'll be okay.
Thanks for the words of wisdom, with a name like BogweedBuck, heck, how can one go wrong!
Since I'm down the road from you, I thought I'd put my two cents in. I saw the same thing with my fish a couple of days after the storm, but I attributed it to a lack of oxygen since the power had been off. I taped a piece of tubing with an air stone attached to a bicycle pump. My husband and I would take turns pumping air into the pond. We did this most of the day, since there was nothing else to do, until the power was restored.
My pond is now crystal clear and the fish seem to be very happy, once again.
Hi wroophus,
nice to meet you neighbor!! Hey, I'm having a buy one get one free sale next week at the nursery...ya need any plants?? come see me! :-)
Ya'll had any damage? Isn't power nice??
Just had a couple of large branches fall down, but luckily, they both missed the house. Yes, power is very nice. The last time I was without power for any extended length of time, except when camping, was for Betsy. I was a youngster, living in Raceland, and we went without power for two weeks.
What kind of plants you selling and where you located? I don't do too much gardening in the fall, but I may go take a look.
ahh yes, I remember Betsy..barely. I was very little, but I do remember going to my maw-maw & paw-paws house. It was so scary..We were without power for Andrew too. That was seemed like it was for days!
Most of our stock are big things, trees, shrubs...nothing really small. We are right next to the North Branch Library, in Gray, across the street from H.L.Bourgeios High. Even if you don't come get anything, stop in and say 'hi'..it would be nice to meet you. You can meet my air gasping fish, who by the way, are no longer gasping!
Lisa how is the fish do ok? I hope so.
I know exactly where your place is, I pass it everyday on my way to Nicholls. I've got some school work to catch up on this weekend, but if I get some time in the next few days, I'll stop in.
What kind of fish do you have? I have a 500 gallon pond with comets and shubunkins, about 20 or so fish. Then I have a small pond, about 20 gallons, with about 50 guppies!! We started with 4 pairs, and well.... now we have a whole bunch of little ones of all sizes.
rose, the fish are okay, thanks for asking! :-)
wroophus,
we will be closed tomorrow, we think we are going to reopen on Tuesday.
The fish I have there are just some fancy goldfish. One of them, Sparkle, is huge. We had her here at the house and moved her to the shop when we opened up in March. I then bought her/him some friends, next thing you know, we had babies all over. We enjoy having them. Our pond is about 200 gals.
Lisa, come live here! We need a good nursery in or near Conroe, we're in the same climate type you're in now, and it's beautiful here! And I want you for a neighbor (closer than you are currently)!
:-)
(But really, seriously, if you're considering a move... this is a great place.)
what kind of natural disasters do ya'll have there in Conroe? Blizzards? Earthquakes? Tornadoes? and how big are ya'll mosquitos??..we want about 4 acres...(we're on 2 here)..find me something and I'm right there! How are the taxes in TX? where the heck is Conroe? LOL!
LOL!
We're about 30 miles north of Houston, so we're still good and humid, still good and hot, but a little further from the water (and where the hurricanes land). When the coast had that freak snow this past winter, we did not (no plants killed). No blizzards, no earthquakes, occasional tornadoes (but we tell them not to get too big, or too close to Conroe), the leaves are all swept into neat piles by the breezes at night, and it only rains when we need it. Ok, maybe I made up those last things. :-)
There's land here and nearby (we're close to the country, lots of horse raising in the area.) No state income tax.
Shall I prepare a room for you?
NO STATE TAXES???? Get a room ready for me...lol
