Trees too close together...

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

We just moved into a new house that has some wonderful plants! However, we do have a few challenges. I'm starting with an easy one (I hope!). I just pruned the tree to the right (it's probably not pruning season, though) so it is no longer choking the Japanese Maple. But this will probably only last for awhile. Is there a good solution for this, short of transplanting? Should I try to keep the other tree smaller and shorter, or just prune it narrow, letting it grow tall? Any suggestions??

Also, if you have any suggestions for low-maintenance plants that would spruce up the area below it, I'd like to hear that, too. :)

Thanks so much!
