Every year I put out several tubs outside to grow a few water lilies that I overwinter (just the rhisomes) in the basement. About this time in late summer I always start to see a frog or two in the tubs. Since I use new tubs every year and I'm a good half mile from any water source, where do these frogs come from to decide to make my small tubs their home and why so late in the season to show up anyway?
Where Do They Come From?
Leopard frogs don't need standing water except to breed.they move at night or during rainy/dewy weather, they can smell the water and head for it.I don't even have a pond or tub at home but still have these frogs in summer.
That little darling looks like a bullfrog. Somehow they just know where to go. Some Leopard frogs would be nice around here but the Bullfroggs eat them all. They are very piggy! Run for the hills. lol Check out the eardrum (is that what it is called?) . That is how to tell the males from the females. The eardrum is larger in males.

Here is a good site to know what damage bullfrogs can do. I love frogs, but I don't buy and feed fish for them to eat.

They all must die
Bullfrogs west of the Rockies are all introduced and wreak an incredible amount of havoc in the environment. I would agree with BogweedBuck.
They serve their purpose in their native habitat.
Maybe we should import some Frenchmen into the west as a control mechanism for the Bullfrogs. C'est la vie!
Great idea! Better yet, let's export some BullFrogs from out west of the Rockies over to France. We could start a new chain of restaurants over there. We could sell stock and fund DG RoundUps with the proceeds. We could name our chain "Les Jambes de Grenouille Frites fraīches Expriment".
I can't remember who sent this to me but I think it came from another environmentalist as a joke when damage to western ecosystems was being discussed. Someone had suggested massive advertising campaigns aimed at getting more people out west to eat frog legs to help reduce the surplus populations. If you like Far Side Humor, it's sort of funny and I think it came from this website-
