Importing plant cuttings

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Have any of you in Canada had plant cuttings ( in this case unrooted orchid cactus) mailed from the USA? I have an offer of some cuttings but am having difficulty finding out if I need an offical certificate to go with the cuttings or whether the individual can just stick them in a padded envelope and mail them! Not coming from a business.

Hi fancyvan. I'm not sure about official certificates, but sometimes they make it without the certs, and sometimes they don't. Depends on the customs official who checks the parcel out apparenly. I've had undeclared cuttings sent to me from Europe; I know others who've had declared cuttings sent from the US - all with no problems. I know of others who've had declared cuttings sent from the US confiscated. So I guess the answer is you probably do need a phyto certificate. No idea how to go about getting one though. I think that the person doing the sending is required to obtain it though. Good luck.
