This tropical hibiscus is in it's 2nd year. It starts out varigated in the spring but then loses the varigation. It's potted and gets morning sun. What's happening?
Varigated hibiscus not varigated, why?
sometimes they just revert for no good reason, but maybe it needs more all day sun too. debi
I agree.
I have some Variagated plants that start green and turn White (Rose of Sharon for one) .
Some start Variagated and go green.
What's the cultivar on your Hibiscus?
Ric and
Ric, I don't know the cultivar.
Mine did the same thing this year..........who knows why. :-) the new growth this fall is variegated.
sometimes if the offshoots are allowed to grow and they do NOT exhibit varigation and they are left on the plant it will revert to plain.. so anytime you see non-variegated.. cut it out and leave only variegated stems. don't ask me why.. it just happens.. another one of those mysteries of life. ;-o
I had read somewhere that variegation is often affected by heat/cold. Cooler temps result in better/more pronounced variegation.
Has this year been hotter than the past in your parts?
(Probably a stupid question...isn't it *always* hot in Texas? (lol!) )
Eclipse's statement that this fall's growth is variegated and your statement that your plant starts out variegated in the spring sort of goes along with that theory.
Mine is growing with nice variegation this year. I've had in on the back deck, in front of both a west and south facing wall. The only direct sunlight it received was in the morning, and it was a pretty 'cool' location, despite a few weeks that were pretty hot. Besides the early morning...it wasn't a 'sunny' location....but a 'bright' one.
Nan, I think that might be what's happening, it is very hot here. I noticed the new growth is varigated.
