I have always rooted all my brugs in water. Never fails to root. I had two shoots off of Culebra and decided to try and root them. When I checked back they had already rotted. No more than two days in the water. I guess soil will be next on the list. Any ideas.
Culebra Cuttings
I havent tried it yet but somebody says using the bubbler helps.I think today is my day to set my bubbler up and see what it does with green cuttings....good luck with whatever you do..I know losing cuttings is very sad.....Judy
If you are having trouble with water rooting, try rooting in soil with a rooting hormone. Many will say no rooting hormone is needed. I use it and have great success. You have nothing to lose.....good luck!!
Jim,I use rooting hormone on Culebra and root them in sand.Don't over water. All others go in a soilless potting mix with no rooting hormone.
Plain ole sand, JT?? I use a bubbler in the winter but suspect that will not work with Culebra, but I'm going to try it. Have you ever left Culebra in the ground?? If so, what were your results??
Plain old sand Sherry.Culebra cuttings seem to not like as much water as most other brugs.I think the sand drains better than the potting mix I normally use.
No,Culebra isn't left outside.I don't know whether it would winter outside or not. It's not one I want to take a chance with.
Thanks, JT!! Somehow I just didn't think Culebra would like the bubbler, but I am going to try it, as well as the sand and wintering outside. I would hate to lose her but I just have this feeling that she is tougher than she appears. I didn't do anything to her last year, except occasional water/fert and she was in almost freezing, in the coldest part of the GH and did great. If she doesn't make it, I'll order up another one, I do not want to be without her, but my goodness, she is picky!!
My goodness. I have wanted a Culebra for quite a while but if it is that fussy I'll pass. I've got enough to do without staying up nights with a plant. LOL
Jeanette
Hey, Jnette, she is the most picky plant I've ever had, yet she perks up, from time to time, promises the moon, and the minute I become hopeful, she throws off her leaves. OTOH, she doesn't mind dry and hot and humid or the cold in the GH and mine is not a bug magnet. But, she has been here one year and has not Yed. I do love her foliage and I have room, I just know she is special and I would give anything to see a bloom...
Picky is right. Mine has Y'ed this year. I think this is the fourth year I have begged her to bloom. I am hoping this will be the year. I hope I'm not putting a curse on her but she is looking so good this year.
Thanks JT I have another shoot that will be ready before long so I will give the sand a shot.
You think she is bad Sherry, wait until I send you that Shredded White cutting you want. Then you will have 2 of them to keep you up nights. LOL
Jeanette
Gosh, that sounds like snowbank...I dont think Im ever going to see a bloom on this plant.....this is the 2nd year I havent seen a bloom...the leaves come out beautiful and then they start to look ratty after awhile...Judy
Juttz, Is your snowbank in full sun? I had mine in the sun for most of the day and it never flowered. I put it next to the house for a few days, because of strong winds. It started to bud. When I put it back in the sun 1/2 of them fell off. I put it back next to the house, where it gets only evening sun, and its fine. It should have flowers within a week.
Kathy, Ive put it everywhere in the yard..its now half under my cherry tree where it looks the best...I have a shoot coming up from the base and that part looks wonderful...the top is getting new grown and has Yed a long time ago...its being very stubborn.....Im not giving up on it since its now become a challenge...lolol...I will try to find a place like you are describing and to think about it..you must be getting radiated heat from your house and I heard that somebody had theirs on the roof and it did wonderful....hmmm got to find a place in my yard like that.....Judy
My Snowbank died. It came back this spring but after getting about 8 inches up it just died. I pulled it to look at the roots and I think it got to much water. It rained everyday all spring and summer.
Jim,
You are a very patient man. lol I don't think I would have kept a brug that didn't bloom after TWO years, much less four! My snowbank doesn't fair very well here, either. I got it last fall and it was about 18 inches. It grew to about 2 foot tall in the spring but then it died back and is now only about a foot tall. I have moved it around and watered it less but just don't know if it is going to make it. Scooter told me one time that Snowbank should be left to the more experienced brug growers and now I think I know what she means. lol I'm hoping I'll do better with it next year (if it makes it, that is). :-)
Hi Terrie, Well I'm not really all that patient. The only reason I have held on to it so long is because Gloria Lessner gave it to me before she died. I just hate to get rid of it because of that. She died the next year after giving it to me. Well my Snowbank looked good when I put it out in the spring but it just plain died real fast. You just wonder why some can grow certain Brugs and others can't get them to live.
If I had YOUR garden full of brugs I would die a happy woman. :-)
oh that too bad.. i 'm still trying to get any to live.lol.. i'll keep trying to... well worth it.. Hope Bobbie is well. take care.. blessings to you both..
