Thanks to MsCritterkeeper for pointing me to this forum! I love to grow anything that blooms, but AVs and Epies are my favorites. I currently have over 100 AV - standards, minis, trailers, semis - most of which I've gotten of eBay. My family tells me I need "Plants Annonymous" because I can't ever seem to get enough! ha ha I have 2 plant stands to accomodate my 'habit'....wanna see?
Here's one...
(oh and I'm always interested in trading leaves/plantlets!)
Greetings all - I'm NEW!
Welcome to DG!! I've been having a blast since subscribing in January.... It's just a fun community, and I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I have!
Your AVs are GORGEOUS! I'm looking forward to seeing closeup pics of some of the ones in bloom... Show us more! :-D
Do you also have outdoor garden areas?
Welcome BetsyJ,
Your stands are lovely!
We can always use someone new to trade with of course.
Please post more PICS of your blooming AV's & Epicias! Don't be shy...we love pics:)
MsC
Wow.......I think I'm in your Support Group. ;-) My husband calls my AV's the "tribbles," (circa. Star Trek) and complains that I'm in "code violation" all the time (no more than one plant per 'sill). Plants are so addictive, especially those AV's! It's a sickness!!
Welcome!
Kathleen
Welcome BetsyJ
Ditto to Critter. Looking forward to seeing some close up photos. I just set up a lighted plant stand. Hope my plants look as good as yours.
Nanna
Thank you all for such a warm welcome! Several asked for more pictures......(oh yes, we ALL like to see violets in bloom!).
Here is one of my violets that came from a leaf - I believe it's "Midnight Cloud". I have several others that came from leaves that have buds on them and I check them every couple hours just to see if they've bloomed yet! ha ha
Yes, Critterologist - I have outdoor gardens too! In fact, just this spring I planted a "Hummingbird Garden" in my back yard. Did all the work myself and it sure did attract the hummers! I can't wait to see it next year after it's had a year to mature. I planted mostly perrenials ~ some bloomed this year, some not.
Here's a recent picture of the garden...
Welcome BetsyJ,
You have some beautiful AV's. All look very healthy too. Your Midnight Cloud is beautiful. More pics please.
I told my husband about your plants annonymous. We wanted to know if they had a support group for spouses who deal us plant nuts also.
Hi love your avs I'd like to know where you bought your lights and stands at? ......Sharon
Hi Sharon.
I got it all at Menards - kindda 'engineered' it myself. The stand is just a wire "shelving unit" 48" long by...uh....72" tall or something like that. With it being 48" long it was PERFECT for one of those cheapy shop lights that hang on a little chain as it's 48" long too. Then I bought 'gro lites' (2 for each shop lite). I took it all home, laid it all out on the floor and put it together withOUT the help of my dear hubby or any tools. Quite an accomplishment for someone as "hardware challanged" as me. All in all, I have about $90 invested...alot cheaper than the commercially made stands.
Sharon...
Duh - it just dawned on me....do you mean the big white plant stand or the other one? The white one is the one I threw together from stuff from Menards. The other one my hubby bought me as a Christmas present last year.....and could find the name of the place for you if you're interested.

HAHA, yes, I have a couple that I check every couple of hours, too! I'm so excited that one AV is getting ready to bloom for its first time. So much fun!
Thanks for posting how you set up your stands. I'm about to do that myself, so that my AVs have a place to grow other than the dining room table. My husband will be very relieved!
It will be great to have another person to trade with. I think before long all us AV people will have all the same AVs!! :) Welcome to DG and the AV forum, and thank you for sharing your pics. I think you'll find it's a lot of fun here and you'll meet a lot of neat people. (Have you found the Butterflies and Hummers forum yet, or is that where you ran into MsC?)
Enjoy!

Beautiful plants! Beautiful yard! Can't wait to trade!

Dana:
The initial reason I subscribed to DG's was to learn more about epies (epiphyllum) - they are a new passion (or should I say ADDICTION) for me. I've bought several off eBay the last few months & didn't know anything about growing them. Once I subscribed it didn't take me long to find the AV forums & trade lists. The trading REALLY got my attention because I'm getting tired of paying $4.95 PLUS SHIPPING for 2 leaves off eBay (although I admit, I just won some more last night! ha ha). I found MsC on the AV trade list and emailed her to see if she was interested in trading and she graciously directed me here. (so if anybody wants to trade let me know!)
I also love cactus & succulents and am now actively posting there, too. C&S is my other 'addiction'. As I said earlier - if it blooms, I wanna grow it! ha ha
~~~~Waving Hello, and Welcome to Dave's Garden. Thanks for sharing your wonderful pictures.
Patti
MsC
Welcome Betsy! I haven't been around enough and am just seeing your thread. What beautiful plants & neat set up you have. That Midnight Cloud is just gorgeous. Ps, this forum will do your addiction no good! Susanne
Hello, I'm another newby. I love your light stand (it reminds me of my own) I have some in the living room and some in the bedroom and I'm hoping to have more in other rooms (oh yeah, some in the dining room too). If there is a pill for this I don't want it. I'm having lots of fun and can guess that you are as well. I've not ever been in a place where I can share my passions (orchids, av's, other gesneriads and the list goes on). I'm pleased to know that there is a place where I can meet others with the same passions and share what I know (which is not a lot) and learn more from members who have been doing this for decades and more recently. I'm really excited. So, a belated welcome. I look forward to sharing with you lots.
Hi jaceb Nice to see you ! Well come to the wonderful World of African violet/Gesneirds :))
Allison
Welcome jaceb. We would love to see some pictures of your AV's / gessies.
Betsy, I love your plant stands. I have one like your fist picture. Glad you are here. : ) Pam
I'm glad someone bumped up this thread. Another person we can enjoy--and torment with our own addictions.
Diane
Welcome to the forum. Your light stands and AVs are great.
