CLOSED: Have: Lots of prickly cactus and other succulents

Northeast, AR(Zone 7a)

Is anyone interested in an assortment of cacti and succulents? A friend of mine gave me literally a vanload of these. She was a major collector and is now moving on to perennials. Below is a picture of my haul. Each box on the table is just crammed full.

I don't know enough about succulents and cacti to know their names, but some are tagged. I'm really interested in getting rid of the pricklies, like the barrel cacti, euphorbias, and whatever the others are. There are also several different kinds of Mothers of Millions, haworthias, gasterias, etc.

I don't have them all sorted out yet, but what I would do is just trade them by the box. You wouldn't get to pick what you get, but I could show you a picture of what's in the box and tell you what names I do know--after I pick out what I want to keep.

In exchange, I'm looking for named elephant ears and named daylilies I don't have. To see a list of what I do have already in my collection, look here:

http://members.gardenweb.com/members/butterflychaser

Scroll down to the bottom and you'll see my plant inventory. The plants on my inventory are NOT for trade unless you see them on my trade list. Most are new from trades and purchases, but you can see what I already have.

I'm told many of these cacti and succulents are rare, but I don't know enough about them to know their value. I only know what I like when I see it.

Is anyone interested in trading for some unusual cacti and succulents? Sorry, none for postage. I'm having a plant swap in 3 weeks and I'm sure I can give them away here without having to pack and mail them. So I'm trading by mail only for other plants or things I can use.

Thanks for looking. Sorry this is so long and vague.

NancyAnn you definitely came back with a haul! Wow, wish I lived closer to come to your plant swap! I'm just getting into the EE's so I know I don't have think I have anything to trade. I do have extra pups of the Taro Black Violet not sure if you do have that one. Only other thing on your list are hostas that I could check to see what I have extras. You don't know if you have an Elephant foot in your new collection or anything that vines? I do have some Donna Dewberry books but I'm also into painting.

NancyAnn the one in ft with the long strap like leaves looks like a red yucca - you really want to keep that one if you have the room! They are stunning, I have four around the Daylily bed in full sun and they love it together. Myself I really dilike the whole prickly thing mess but res yucca is one of the few I have. Mitch

Hi ,wow you can start your own desert garden . You are amazing . I don't know how you do it !!!I need some of you energy well thanks for the pics and you take care, And if your have any spare energy that you can share I'll send Sase ....LOL .........Sharon

Northeast, AR(Zone 7a)

Hey Donna, I'm sorry to say, I don't ship plants out of the US. I've had packages confiscated by customs so it's just been a waste of money, and on top of that, it costs more than mailing in the states.

Mitch, the plant you think is a red yucca is actually an unusual cylindrical sanseveria. Are you talking about the plant in the front on the ground on the left? That's a sanseveria--quite rare. I got several different sans, which I love.

I have several different yuccas here, and one of them is supposed to be a red yucca. I love them. My brother in Phoenix (also a plant collector) subscribed me to Phoenix Home and Garden for my birthday. Boy does he know me well??

Sharon, I'm sorry I don't mail energy for SASE. It's for pickup only, so come on down! LOL

Yuccas are great I think for the look in the garden and winter color. Looke it up in plant files and looks like a great plantm white blooms I am guessing? or did you score some great even rare color to boot!

Augusta, AR(Zone 8a)

Wow Nancy, you did great!! I only wished I'd seen the post earlier so I could of beat ya to um, lol. You know I am into the cacti and succulents, but have nodda to offer ya that you don't already have! The one you say is a sanserveria is really cool, but aren't they all. You are so lucky to be able to get to go to so many cool places, meet so many wonderful people, and garden to your hearts content. Oh the lives and times of Nancy Ann. Congrats, you deserve it. I am a huge fan of haworthias and gasterias. I don't have any named daylilies, EEs or hostas. I did dig up a large, unnamed pink peony today that I decided I did not want to keep. Would you possibly be interested in that? I realize it is a far stretch, but I figured I would give it a try... I'll take no offense at a "No way!". :)

Sheila, you know I'll share with you when you come to the plant swap. I don't even know the names of all these plants. One I'm really excited about is a black plant that is filling a pot. It looks like black hen and chicks. And she said it looks black when it's healthy! It's not dead. It's beautiful! And I got a black gasteria I think it is. You know I love odd looking plants. I got some beautiful euphorbias.

The ones I really don't want are the pricklies. There are barrel cacti and other kinds of cactus and very prickly euphorbias I don't want. Sheila, are these something you'd be interested in? Some are fairly large. And I can share some of the different haworthias and stuff too. I got some really neat plants, some I've never seen before.

I unpacked these yesterday and here's some pics of what I got.

What a haul!! I'm making another pool of drool here....sigh.
:) Donna

Poor Donna! Hon, just wipe the drool off your chin, pack up, and head to the states. In fact, we could be neighbors. A friend of mine has a rental house that just became vacant. Come on down. We'll set you up and fill your house and yard with plants. Are you packed yet? LOL

NancyAnn

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

I would but I think DH & DD would have a fit....lol.

Augusta, AR(Zone 8a)

Nancy, I'm like you on the odd plants. Like em out there, like me, lol. Yep I see lots of things I'd love to have, however I am sure you would do better by trading them for things you want. I did get some named iris, (some from some really generous dgers, other bought), but they are one fan as of yet, and more than likely you have them all already. That's what I get for finding a friend that has it all, lol. Lots of those babies could be shared through cuttings (hint hint, lol), but I feel like you always give more than I have to give in return. You are really cool that way!! I have got to find a way to get to that swap, but like I told Corinne(blazer1) I am outta soil to pot things up, and hubby's truck still down. (Sigh) I told her I did have all those things left from the other swap in pots still, but they look like , and I doubt anyone would want them looking that way. I have lots of stuff I want to thin out, but no soil, and there's only so much I could fit in a car. We'll see. Oh by the way, did your chives bloom that we dug from the friend in the boonies? Mine looks more like some kinda allium to me. Very pretty, but chives??...what is your take on that?

Northeast, AR(Zone 7a)

Sheila,

You should find a buddy and y'all come to the swap. You don't have to trade ya know. You can just come and hang out, tour Shirley's gardens (again) and Gail's, and see the new Nature Center with all the rest of us butterfly chasers and plant snatchers.

If soil is the only problem, lots of things don't need soil--daylilies, cannas, irises, any bulbs, succulents, etc. For the ones that do, just pack them like you're going to mail them. Take off all the dirt, wrap them in damp paper towels and then baggies. Label them and bring 'em. People can pot them up when they get home with them. No problem, girl.

As for trading with me, I'll take it out of your hide. You can help me pot up the 75 daylilies I bought yesterday from a hybridizer. You can help me weed. I'll always trade plants for labor, you know. And you're such a wonderful worker. You'll always have a job here. I sure could use you to help get ready for the garden party. Wanna come and stay the rest of the weekend? The guest room is ready! And your hubby could visit his sis while you're in town. We can have a cookout and just play in the dirt.

Honestly, I really want the pricklies gone. I don't like barrel cacti and thorny euphorbias and some of these are too big to ship. So you're welcome to 'em. Many of the succulents have multiplied enough to share, and other plants, like you said, will grow easily from cuttings.

If you're not doing anything this weekend, come on over. I'll feed you guys. We'll set up an air mattress in the living room for the kids to sleep on. And we'll all just get dirty. I got lots of stuff you "need". LOL

Donna, donna, donna, quit pouting and start packing. LOL I'll throw the burgers on the grill. How do you like yours?

NancyAnn

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

I like my burgers well done. I wish I could come but I have to go back to work next week.
:) Donna

Northeast, AR(Zone 7a)

Donna, I'll make your burger well done...and then I'll eat for ya. LOL

Work sure is hampering your gardening! Fortunately I work at home...with my gardening. I love doing what I love for a living. Now if I could just clone myself so I could get all this work done...

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

That's right...you sell on ebay, right? Maybe another year I can save my money to come down for a visit if I'm still invited..lol.

Aurora, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, Butterfly, my husband would KILL me if I came home w/such a haul! He groans and cringes when I "pop into" plant stores as it is........gosh, what fun you had!

Northeast, AR(Zone 7a)

MK, I'm going to admit something I haven't admitted to anyone before. But when I came home with this vanload of stuff, as I was unloading the van, it suddenly hit me. I'm a...a...ummmmm...an...well, I'm an add... Well, actually I just like plants a lot. Yeah, that's all it is. I love plants. I can quit anytime I want to...and when I want to, I'll let ya know.

But honestly, as I was unloading, I couldn't help but suddenly be overwhelmed and asked myself, "What were you thinking???? Where are you gonna put all this???" I still don't have an answer yet.

I joined a ten step program for plantaholics once. It was a pretty nifty little program, I must admit. Each step lead right to another unique plant I had to have (and they're all still potted up, waiting for me to make room for them in my gardens.). LOL

NancyAnn

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

No wonder you're so familiar. I must have seen you at one of the meetings....lol!
:) Donna

Augusta, AR(Zone 8a)

Well Nancy, your not alone. I keep telling dh that you are my inabler, lol. I am totally OBSESSED!!! There I said it, but at least I have a nice habit. Lots of worse things I could be doing with my time. Besides gardening keeps me sane; honestly I get depressed when I can't get out in my gardens. And of course there's the greenhouse to keep me going in the winter months. Really makes me weep for all the Katrina victims that no longer have a yard much less a garden to play in. We are so blessed!

Northeast, AR(Zone 7a)

Your enabler, Sheila? Ahhhh, now I know why I was put on earth! It all makes sense now. LOL

N.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I've been having fun following this thread with the great pics -- what a haul! Unfortunately, DH tells me I'm running out of space for overwintering plants in the morning room, and he tolerates my one prickly cactus only because it's up on a stand where he won't bump into it.

However, I wanted to give you a nudge to please look back up the thread & see that Amy was really interested... Hope I'm not out of line, but I thought with the discussion of your upcoming swap weekend (which sounds amazing, BTW), you might have missed her post. :-)

Vieques, PR(Zone 11)

Hi, I would love to have something blooming if possible and I would be more than glad to send you something in return. I have done some "zip code" postings but I am new and do not know if you can pull them up. We have heliconias and gingers that have not been added and many more tropicals.

Northeast, AR(Zone 7a)

Some of these are just too large to mail, and naturally those are the ones I REALLY want to get rid of. I'm primarily interested in getting rid of the prickly plants. Since Sheila will probably come and get them and save me having to pack and ship, I think I'll close this offer for now. I still haven't had time to sort thru it all, but I have culled out the pricklies. Later if I have extra haworthias and other succulents, I'll post a new thread. Sorry, Amy and everyone else. Maybe later.

NancyAnn
