Getting ready to Lasagna

Mississauga, ON(Zone 6a)

Sounds like I'm getting ready to do a dance. :•)

I've been shredding newspaper in readiness for a lasagna garden this Fall. I took the top off my regular shredder and put it over the large size garbage container - works just fine. Had to give the shredder a rest once in a while, as it over-heated.

It's that time of year again. sigh .....

A woman I know that lives in Burlington, has a lasagna garden. She really enjoys it and says it's the best garden she has. She has many, but this one is rich and very 'loose' to remove and plant things. She grows brugs in hers and they do really well. If I was going to put in a garden, this would be the kind.

ok sounds like your lasagna and mine are different - i have only ever used it to refer to planting several types of generally bulbs at different depths for different bloom timing. what's yours? sounds like a literate garden - what daily do you use?

Heard of lasagna gardening before, but the newspapers were laid down in sheets, and the other stuff was layered on top. Where there's one method, there's always another.

echoes - You are right, they are generally laid down in sheets because it's usually done over sod, and the sheets help smother the sod. In my case I'm going to build up the soil in an existing bed, hence the shredded paper.

I'm going to enlarge another bed which is bordered with grass so sheets of paper will be used there.

And lots of water.

Joan I never heard of this before. So, we can lay newspaper down over grass and then place soil over that?To enlarge a flower bed instead of digging the grass out?
To build up a flower bed with shredded paper-on top of the soil and then add more soil??

This sounds neat- especially to put over grass if that works..I have 2 flower beds to enlarge and this would be a big help and less physical work if we can do this.
