Holes in Cement Cast Leaves??

North Saanich, Canada

Just a quick question. I have started doing some leaves again within the last week. The first attempt at an elephant ear was a disaster, as I used old Portland, and apparently that is a NO NO!!!! If your Portland is old and you have to break up chunks between your fingers, then your cement leaves will be very powdery and the edges can just be broken off like a darn!! So that one goes in the garbage.
Now I have new Portland, have done several leaves, but I am always disappointed when the front of the cement leaf ends up with small holes. Anyone have advice on how to correct that???
You can notice it especially on the hydrangea leaf on the right.
