Thanks Texans :) What a 'step up to the plate' job y'all are doing with this hurricane crisis :) So much news about what you folks are doing; just have to tip my hat to each of you :) The Astrodome of course but all the other stuff too :)
AUSTIN, TX (AP): Texas public schools will enroll children of Hurricane Katrina refugees sheltered within each district.
The Texas Education Agency has been directed to provide all needed support for districts having to absorb children from Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. TEA has said the refugee children can qualify as "homeless" and may enroll without proof of residence.
Also, normal immunization requirements for attending school or child-care facilities in Texas will be temporarily waived for children displaced by the hurricane. Schools are allowed to waive the 22-to-one teacher-student requirement.
Districts with an influx of 50 or more students can get an immediate funding increase, rather than waiting until the end of the school year.
Austin schools are working to ensure the students get backpacks, school supplies and clothes.
OK - I'm not a Texan - just wanna say Thanks and tip my hat
Thanks Dea,
Of course everyone hurts for all the people displaced by Katrina, but we certainly do feel it in a special way for our neighbors. I've been very happy to see/hear all the ways TX and Texans have been responding and helping. We will certainly find more and new ways to do so in the next days, weeks and months to come.
A salute to TEXAS!!
Couldn't resist...

I've seen a lot of places
I've been around the world
I've seen some pretty faces
Been with some beautiful girls
But after all I've witnessed one thing still amazes me
Just like a miracle you have to see to believe
'Cause God blessed Texas with His own hand
Brought down angels from the promised land
Gave 'em a place where they could dance
If you wanna see heaven brother here's your chance
I've been sent to spread the message
God blessed Texas
First He lit sunshine
Then He made the waters deep
Then He gave us moonlight
For all the world to see
Well everybody knows that the Lord works in mysterious ways
He took a rest then on the very next day
God blessed Texas with His own hand
Brought down angels from the promised land
Gave 'em a place where they could dance
If you wanna see heaven brother here's your chance
I've been sent to spread the message
God blessed Texas
God blessed Texas with His own hand
Brought down angels from the promised land
Gave 'em a place where they could dance
If you wanna see heaven brother here's your chance
Well I've been sent to spread the message
God blessed Texas
Well I've been sent to spread the message
God blessed Texas
Well I've been sent to spread the message
Mmm...God blessed Texas
San Antonio is expecting to host at least 2,500 some of whom have arrived. Plans to find job and school openings are well underway. We expect these folks to be with us for quite a while.
This terrible nightmare certainly underscores the need our country has to vigorously re-examine our infrastructure and put together the funding for urgently needed upgrades - not only for levees but also dams, bridges, transmission lines and railroad systems.

I worked for Liberty ISD in Liberty, Texas and we have been getting kids enrolled into school just this past few days..cuz ..I drive a school bus and the kids are excited cuz they are going to school..and a place to live and a safe place to play!!!...
Bless their sweet little hearts! Can you imagine kids excited to go to school? This time it represents normalcy to them.
