im feeling much better today

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

het everyone im up and moving after me teeth are gone lol it really was not so bad. anyway im up and redy to chat.

bogweedbuck are you interested in canna omega or a varigated canna stuttgart for those ears please let me know and what were the ears again. macrorrhiza borneo giant or robusta.

Leesburg, VA(Zone 7a)

I just bought a Robusta from a lovely lady whose husband better keep on his toes!

The borneo giant is not one that I have ... yet. However I would not mind adding the Omega canna to my tropicals collection. A canna that size would look rather impressive around the pond or marking off the end of my little bamboo grove.

Oh, and I need to find a way to get my quasi-criminal butt up that mountain to dig up those Gunnera for you ... and whomever else (Ric?) that wanted one. "The Man" has politely requested that I only utilize my vehicle for business purposes only, Mon ~ Sat, 0630 thru 1800. Collecting gunnera roots has got to have *something* to do with work, right?

YES! God's Work!!!!!!!!!

I'll keep you posted.

ps: nice to have you and your gums feeling better today.

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

thank you alot. i just orderd robusta and borneo giant from Enid at natural selection the rhizomes of the canna omega are at least 2 but i believe 3rd year and where around 20 foot tall when i dug them up i will set you up with a few. plus im so happy my seed are sprouting for moonflower and castor bean plants.

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

by the way bogweedbuck those omega came from brian i got close to 80 of then and ill send you a few with new growing tips so just plant the sprouts on the rhizomes up. there alredy about 5 to 6 inches long.

ill put up a picture of the exact ones ill ship you if thats what you want for the gunnera they remind me of something like a voodoo lily in a way

Jerry

Leesburg, VA(Zone 7a)

No need, bro! That's way too cool. (20ft .... hahahahaha I love it!)

Should I just be getting some rhizomes and getting them dormant or should I go ahead and plant despite the fact that they'll have to come back up in about 4 weeks or so???

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

well thats up to you man you could pot them and set them in the window or green house but there fairly large rhizomes i got them for my breeding project. i will be digging mine back up for the greenhouse but they get huge and will be a valued plant in you're colection as you cant really find them that often.

Leesburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Sadly, I am still without a greenhouse. That has GOT to change one of these years ... and soon!

Okay, so they'd be cool only having a few weeks (6 tops) to grow and then be dug up? Can they be put dormant like most other Cannas?

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

there big enough that they should be ok and yes just pack them in damp spagnum moss as to keep them from dry rotting.
there also rumored to be fairly hardy but im going to test that theory

Leesburg, VA(Zone 7a)

You beat me to the next question. I'll store these in my root cellar (which is actually my home studio, but to spare the rest of the house the noise levels I have no heating/AC vents going into that room when we enclosed and sound-proofed it last year)

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

cool im working on a studio next year this year its plants and greenhouse lol. thats a reall tough decision but im ok with it lol.

Leesburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Serenading your seeds and roots!

Hold on, that's her job?

Nevermind ..........

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

lol

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Glad to hear you survived your ordeal, Jerry.

I had to go lookup Omega Canna, 20 feet high!!! I just had to see one.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I was looking at it too Kell, do we dare try them here?! LOL
Thanks guys for your enlightening and entertaining posts!

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

yes they do get really big and i only have a few im willing to part with as i need the my self for breeding but i will be redy to trade next spring and maby even trade a few established plants in the summer so if you want some let me know and ill put you on the list right after bogweedbuck. he gets his now and ill go down the list from there as they are available.

Leesburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Well, dude .... Redz called back this afternoon to correct himself on the Gunnera. No dice on live plants, the landlord zapped 'em with RoundUp! last night.

HOWEVER, he said he collected a couple dozen seeds last year that he swears are viable and germinated very readily for him. He's one of those guys who grows all sorts of plants and herbs to make his own concentrates, tinctures, etc etc etc ... In fact, I catch him snagging flowers off of my purple coneflower all the time, "Dude, I'm just dead-heading them for ya ... they'll shoot up more flowers and besides, the 3 of us will have more echinacea extract for the winter! You want dead flower tops or no colds and flu's?"

He has no shame.

All the same, he said he'll bring the seeds over when he come to help set up the studio this week/weekend.

On a pretty much unrelated note ... do you or Brian have any Joshua Trees? (yucca brevifolia)

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

well i dont but i think he does im in to any kind of elephant ear or waterlily lotus anything so surprize me and ill hook you up with those seeds and 2 good size canna rhizomes. ps we really like lotus and ee's did i say that lol but i do want those seeds

Leesburg, VA(Zone 7a)

"I'll see ya and raise .........."

Half of the lotus seeds I currently have (Speciosa ... one of the really large lotus'), as many Gunnera seeds as I get from Redz (the wife's not happy with all of my aroids, the Gunnera was more than she could handle ... ergo, they're yours!) a couple of Baobob Tree seeds (Adamsonia 'somethingoranotherii' ... a close relative of the 'Fatchamata' species, of course) and some seeds of Aralia spinosa. The Aralia should be a nice compliment to the effect you're probably trying to get with the castors.

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

cool how may lotus seeds are we talking and the rest sounds good. my wife adores the lotus and how would i germinate those.

Leesburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Let me go check the pod (I haven't removed the seeds from that yet .... just picked up Sunday) .... if memory serves, I think there are 10 or 12 seeds that all appear firm, dark and viable. That should, needless to say, net you 5 or 6 seeds.

Sound good?

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Hate to hear that about the Gunnera......errrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!

Seeds would do just fine though.
It appears I'm going to have some odora seeds!
One of the pods is plumping up nicely.

Ric

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

If the Gunnera was prolific with the seeds, can I be on the list for those?

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

sounds like a deal bog

Leesburg, VA(Zone 7a)

henry: color it done. I'll keep a few seeds for myself for $*#!~s and giggles, and then divvy up the rest between you and carla. I just got an alocasia odora yesterday, although she's a bit on the thin side, I am hoping she'll make it. We could, however, discuss this further here after I see Redz.

Badseed: If there are a plentitude of these, I'll shoot you some as well. I'm not in the mood for your first born manchild, so we'll have to talk more once we know something.

Uncle carla: are folding, calling me, or raising? lol

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Buck Thanks!
Ric

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Well I do have a variety of ears (which may be on your wish list) and a decent stand of Arundo (as henry/Ric can surely confirm), so make sure not to leave us girls out! LOL I am far more than the human pez dispenser! :P

Leesburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Human Pez dispenser!!!! hahahahahaha .... sorry, but I had to scroll up to catch your meaning on that one!

Anyhow, I best keep the conversation moving before I get myself in trouble ... didn't mean to excluse, just not sure how many seeds I'll get and I've already given the nod to at least some of them to Ric & Uncle Carla. If Redz really hooks me up, I plan on hooking you up as well.

"human Pez dispenser" .......... oh man!!!!!!

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

.... I am far more than the human pez dispenser! :P....

That's true she dispenses Rum and Cokes quite well too!!!!!

Ric (Don't worry Chele I'll save some for you)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I just wanna make sure you boys don't form a "he-man she-hater club" like on "the little rascals". Some of us girls have some pretty cool plants too! LOL

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

yeah, what she said! :-)

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Trust me Chele is more Man than most of us, guys!

The Chele I first met could slap around a bar full of Saturday night drunks.
Carried more metal than a pair of Bikers.
Partied harder than a boat full of sailors.

Course then she got married,
had the girls
and settled down to the calming life of Domestic Gardening Diva. RROOTTFFLL!!!!!!

But I agree she DOES have cool plants :)

Course after this post I may never see them again.......................

Ric

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Well, thank you Ric I will take all that as a compliment! LOL

A bit of sucking up might get you visiting rights. LOL

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

(((HUG)))

Ric (Who doesn't do sucking up well........
but would NEVER join a women haters club.
That would knock out 99% of my friends)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

It's alright. I know where you live and what hours you work. I feel a shopping spree coming on. :O}

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Don't worry I hid the cool plants in the NEW robusta.
You'll never find them.
(Oh did I mention the robusta came in today from Enid?)

Course I may never find them again either..........lol

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

My Robusta from Enid arrrived today too.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

ahelms,
Sweet !
These little guys will make GREAT carports in a little while! lol

After the Katrina hit FL took I figured it would be weeks or months before they could ship again.

Ric

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

my invoice from Enid is in the mail so my robusta and borneo giant should be here next week yay

Leesburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Bummer, dude ... mine arrived yesterday too.

On a slightly different note, though, I purchased something called an A. sinuata bullata last week. Still has its baby leaves, tho, so I can't fully tell which direction this pup's gonna take. Anyone else here ever hear of this supposed hybrid?

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Yes Buck I have it.

I'm guessing you got it at Cloud Jungle?

I'll post a shot of mine this weekend.
I started it out in the Vivarium.

Ric
