Red Yuccas not blooming - suggestions please

Dallas, TX(Zone 7b)

I've just recently joined Dave's Garden and have a question about my non-blooming red yuccas. I live in Dallas and have planted about 10 red yuccas (1 gal) in different areas of my yard. Some probably get more water than others, but most get at least 6-7 hours of sun, and some even more. They have been in the ground for a couple of months and none of them have even tried to bloom! I thought these plants were foolproof and I see them blooming everywhere, except my yard. Even down the middle of Central Expressway, I am taunted by lovely red blooms. Are mine too young to bloom? Any suggestions would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

could be that yours are too young to bloom but planting shock.

Plants set out two months ago are still working to anchor their roots. That takes priority over blooming and even over new growth.

According to Neil Perry and Plants Delight Nursery, red yucca need sun all day long and do best in very dry soils. Your yucca are probably not getting enough sun and getting too much water.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I'll try a little less water and a lot more patience!

I planted my red yucca last year in July. It didn't flower until this April, but it has been flowering ever since. It gets watered with the rest of my yard but I have it in a well drained area. I think patience is the key!

Hi Neatstuff2. Welcome! There is a building at the corner of Pearl and Woodall Rogers close to downtown that has a very large corner bed planted with nothing but red yuccas. The first couple of years they were planted they looked so skinny and lonely in that bed. Now they bloom their heads off and it is a site to see. Full sun, not much water, lots of patience. :-)

Trunnels thanks for the info. I get by Woodall and Pearl occasionally and I'll check them out. The ones going down Central seem to be doing fine and I know they don't get any extra care!
