Just had a thought, folks. What about sending the DART down there to supply clean drinking water.

Help for Louisiana
it's good to ask Ginny, but it took a month of dithering for them to send after the Tsunami, hopefully they'll learn their lesson now and go quicker!.
I just wrote mine, now I wait to see if he'll answer. When I have previously written to him, he's taken his time.

If y'all aren't watching The Hurricane Relief Fund from DG, there's a thread here:
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/541411/
Lots of input is desired so we can help our DG family in this catastrophe.
Thanks Darius. It is getting worse and worse by the sound of things.

Thought some of you would be interested in an email I received tonight from dogbane (a DG member that is no longer a subscriber).
Before I forget, my brother who lives in a town just south of the
city, told me something I think you'd find interesting. According to
him, in the week after Katrina, during the height of the crisis, the
first 'first responders' he met in his town were the Canadian Royal
Mounted Police! You should be proud and you should know how much we
appreciate the kindness of your country
For those here that remember him he said that both his home and business survived (they are both located in the French Quarter of New Orleans).

That is so nice to know, thanks Lilypon.

I've been reading this ever since Katrina started.

Some of the recent ones re Carnival Cruise Lines and Fema and credit cards should not be missed.
Inanda
wow, thanks for the info Pam about our beloved RCMP, and Inanda for the blog above.
It does make you feel good that our country helped make a difference for some. I found a more extensive write-up at their site:
* We're up and running .
We returned to New Orleans in mid October and re-opened the gallery October 15th.
The French Quarter is back in business, and we have been doing well. The Fredrick Guess Studio is only one of a number of businesses who have returned and are working to revitalize the city. Likewise, Magazine Street business are open and the restaurants are crowded. And thankfully Cafe du Monde is serving hot begneits again!
We hope that all of you, our friends from around the world, will come back to visit as soon as you are able. Your visits can help us help ourselves.
We'd like to take a moment to thank all of the aid workers who came to help in our time of need, many of whom are still here. I'd especially like to thank the Canadian Royal Mounted Police who, I am told by someone who was there, were the first 'first responders' to reach my hometown of Lafitte, Louisiana. The response from around the world, as well as around the country, has been tremendous and indespensible.
On a lighter note, signs of the return to normalcy abound. Humor is making a real comeback and it's great to see. The Times-Picayune recently published a letter to the editor written by Bruce Stewart in which he listed ten "Tips for better post-Katrina living in New Orleans". Among my favorites were "Go to Pat O's and order anything but a you-know-what" and "When you go to Mother's (Restaurant) you may want to resist ordering the roast beef with debris".
Then there are the bumper stickers. The history of one particular bumper sticker motto is really telling. The original read "New Orleans - Proud to Call it Home". Long ago that morphed into everything from "Nouvelle Orleans - C'est Chez Nous" and "New Orleans - Oy Vey!" to culminate(?) in "New Orleans - Proud to Crawl Home." Today, I saw where someone scratched out the "Crawl" and wrote over it "New Orleans - Proud to Swim Home"!!!
We took a hard licking from Katrina, and many are still in utter limbo or worse. But looking around at those who have been lucky enough to be able to return, and seeing how those individuals are rebounding gives hope that we are not going to give up. Instead, there is every reason to expect a leaner, stronger, more vibrant New Orleans than anyone could have expected just two months ago.
We of the City of New Orleans look forward to your return so that we can again show off both our architectural assets and our reknown hospitality.
I admit I had to put in a small order at his site: http://www.fredrickguessstudio.com/index.html The vibrant colours that Fredrick uses looks mighty nice to eyes that will be looking at grey/white/& brown for the next 6 months. ;)
edited to say dogbane isn't Fredrick..... dogbane runs the gallery in New Orleans.

Two years ago I'd asked him for pictures of the "Cities of the Dead" in this thread: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/416113/
The above email included a few.....
BTW Lynn (jagonjune) I mentioned this thread to him: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/543921/ .I'm going to cut and paste it and email it to him. He says he has a nephew that might be interested in it.
I took a look at the paintings and cards Pam. Did you get "Irises in the Bayou"? I like the nature scene cards the most.
*smack* on the head! ;) Never thought of that.....ordered the French Quarter collection instead.

Iris are my one of my favs but when the hurricane came in it was the city that I feared would be gone......I actually looked at his site the day before Katrina hit (mainly to send an email to say "I hope this finds you and yours looooooooooooooong gone" ).
Those are nice too. So colourful. Where will you put them?
Thinking of putting them together and framing them like they're pictured at the site. We painted the third floor with colours that should compliment them. Come the dead of winter I *will* be up there often. ;)
Eventually I'd love to get an actual painting from there.

After the lottery? Then you could make a theme room. Mardi gras beads across the doorway, voodoo doll base lamps, golly I don't know. I've never been.
Gonna have to be with yet another heading off to be educated. ;)
LOL I like your idea there echoes.......maybe I'll beg for a few more goodies to be purchased and stuck in the box. :)
Hi Guys
I heard DART was in Pakistan and India for the Earthquake zone.
I thought they got there much quicker than the Tsnami. I wonder if they have two teams? We sure could sent the other one.
I also have a friend who was just transfered this summer to the east coast as her husband is an engineer with the armed forces and he was in New Orleans very quickly with two ship fulls of our armed forces. They were there about a week after. There ships brought water and water purifying equipment.
Also a team from our SPCA who raised money and went down to assist with the animal recovery , they were there when the next huricane went through.
What ever we can do should be done, these folks are our neighbors.
Ann
I
I think it was finding (renting) a large enough plane to transport Dart that took so long for them to arrive after the Tsnami.
I agree. It's going to take a long time to recover and those businesses have to survive somehow in the meantime. dogbane said the hotels will be reopening in about 6 months. He also said New Orleans needs workers badly but, Catch 22, there isn't the housing available for them. I still have a hard time comprehending just how devasted the Gulf Coast is. dogbane said that he himself finds it difficult to believe (and then he goes for a drive and sees miles upon miles of abandoned houses and pieces of peoples' lives strewn everywhere).
Those that were/are there in person would/will certainly feel the joy of putting out a helping hand (and the heartbreak of seeing it first hand).

Wow, how generous is that!. What a fun parcel to open. Beautiful print.
Dogbane's lagniappe is wonderful!
Thanks echoes......it was really a lovely surprise!
Hi Darius
It certainly is! I also have to do 2 library showcases for the month of December...thinkin' now one will be Rediscover New Orleans. BTW the jambalaya (unopened as of yet) smells wonderful! Ü
One of my fellow reference desk co-workers has travelled the world extensively and she said she has only had *good* coffee at two places in the world......one was at Cafe du Monde and the other was at a small town near her birthplace in England.

I have has coffee and beignets at Cafe du Monde and it was pretty wonderful, esp. @ 6:30 am when the sun was just coming up and it was cool off the levees!

BTW, I collect feather masks, some the size you received, and a few large outstanding ones by GYPSY RENAISSANCE http://store.yahoo.com/grstore/catalog.html
It looks (and sounds) wonderful Darius! I really mean to experience it myself one of these days but until then I might just order a tin of coffee from them.
Those masks are treasures! Reminds me of the old movies where the French are at a masked ball.
LOL, Pam. I went to an ASID conference in Washington DC and my secretary had signed me up for the masked ball without telling me. I had to call home and have a friend overnight one of my better masks and go out to buy something formal to wear.
Turns out 2 other women had fantastic feather masks too and when we compared them, all were by Gypsy Renaissance. It really was a scene out of an old movie, with cocktails at DAR Constitution Hall and a sit-down dinner for 1,000 at the National Building Museum which has 4 of the largest corinthian columns in the world. Tables of 10 with 3 waiters each, no prepared plates, 3 wines, and then baked alaska for 1,000. Can you imagine catering that? LOL.
Sorry, think I hijacked your thread!
Nope......and they would be soooooooooo happy I wasn't catering it! ;)
It sounds like an evening to remember.....I love Dave's and all the personal stories we get to enjoy here. :)
