Never heard of or seen a 'Day Lily' bloom at night. Now there is a water lily called the 'Trudy Slocum' which is a tropical night blooming water lily. If anyone Does have a night blooming 'Day Lily' I sure would like to have one. Let me know where to get one at.

I have some very dark burgundy double bloom columbine. It is almost black and the flower doesn't look much like columbine at all IMO because it has many layers of petals and no spurs.

I also will have (if I succeed in harvesting the seed) very dark purple and rosey bronze salvia. It makes a low (10"), bushy, dark-leafed plant and lots of large blooms (compared to most salvia).

My moonflower vines are finally growing well, so I should have seeds later on.

I'll also have 'black' and 'star of Yelta' (very dark purple) morning glory seeds.

Your night and goth garden are beautiful and creative ideas. I wish I lived close enough to see them when you have them going.

Okay, Now don't jump me, but why was the most fragrant of all nightblooming flowers left out of your night garden--Brugmansia?

Lufkin, TX(Zone 8a)

Paris - I would love to have seeds from any that you could part with. I don't have a lot of things to trade with yet (zinnia, cosmos, mixed 4 O'clocks, bachelor buttons, mammoth sunflower and Mexican sunflower) but I will have some Love in a Puff vine seeds at the end of the growing season. My address is:
Sandi Hankins

Brugmansia: I got the list I posted from a Moon Garden website - the Green Thumb bug just recently bit me so I don't know that much about flowers yet. :)

There is a cactus "night blooming cereus" you might like.

Woodbourne, NY(Zone 5a)

I just collected the columbine, but it will be a while before they others give me seed. Would you like the columbine now? You may want to start it as soon as possible. As a perennial, it might need more than one season to bloom.

The black morning glory gave me its first bloom today, and, though it is lovely, it is far from black. It is a deep fuchsia color. Star of Yelta is much darker -- the darkest morning glory to my knowledge. You might also consider Grandpa Otts, which is almost as dark with radiating fuchsia stripes.

Ivey's suggestion of cereus is an excellent thought. I would call it a succulent, rather than a cactus (there are no spines). I have grown them since I was a teenager. They are a long-term commitment, though. The blooms will form only on second-year growth, so, even in ideal circumstances, it will be two years before you get blooms. Many people wait 5-7 years though.

The blooms are truly worth the wait. They are huge, beautiful and worthy of ritual worship -- ok, maybe that is an overstatement.

All who own them hold them very precious. The large (nearly a foot across), delicate blooms resemble water lilies and have an intoxicating scent. And they bloom only one night. I have frequently dragged a group of night revelers back to my apartment (when I lived in the city) on the designated night -- with them complaining all the way -- only to have them thank me profusely for including them in so extraordinary a spectacle.

The bloom begins to open in the late evening -- perhaps 11:00. It is fully open by around 1:00. Then, by dawn, it is hanging limp and dead.

Excellent for gothic effect.

Yes there is most definatly a Night Blooming Day Lily!! I have just received some seeds and have not started them yet. I was only given 5 seeds but if I run across any more I will let you know. I also have Datura "Moon Flower" and I'm waiting for Black Columbine if you are interested email me and I will see what else I have!! Have fun with your new gardens!! Wish I would have thought of that!!

Paris: I have some of the Star of Yelta morning glories now - I love them! And I'm planning on putting up a trellis with those running at the back of the Goth garden - and a trellis of Moon Flowers a the back of the Moon garden.

The cereus sounds absolutely gorgeous! I'll have to look for that one!

We recently bought an acre lot across the street from our house and I have about 1/2 of it that I'm doing my gardens on. I want to put a walkway and a bench between the 2.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

hey Dannie, what's the name of that daylily? I wasn't trying to be smart, I have never heard of one. We sit out a lot at night and one close to the house would be great. Baylee, I have several different colors of daturas, if you're interested ~ white, purple and lilac.

Woodbourne, NY(Zone 5a)

Baylee -- I just read about a Japanese morning glory, named 'Dai' (good name for the gothic garden!), that is small and light gray. I thought you might be interested. The Latin name is Ipomoea nil. I think the originator had a sense of humor.

Lufkin, TX(Zone 8a)

Paris: Oooooo.. gray would be great for the goth garden! I'll have to look that one up too.

tiG: Sure .. I'd love to have some of the daturas!

Hamilton, Canada
