favor to ask Christina

Knoxville, TN

I just came from a trip to your web site, Christina. (Definately a favorite place to visit)
I am amazed at the number of plants you have gotten into the window garden on the home page. I have run out of places to hang my Hoyas and was in awe of how neatly you have packed in so many plants.
Would you happen to have other pictures of your interior Hoya gardens? I am hoping for some inspiration before I begin the task of moving all my plants inside in preparation for old man winter. I am totally out of hanging space.
I would love to see any other members interior gardens as well.
THANKS!!!

Good request, Mel. Since I don't have a greenhouse and many plants that can't winter outside either (even here), I am always looking for ideas too.
One of my main problems is finding a way to hang most of the simple pots that come with wire or plastic snap-on hangers and don't have a saucer attached. I don't really want to change all the pots, but need a way to catch the drips. What I would like is just some kind of saucer that would just fit onto them so I could just use the hanger already there. Any ideas on that?
Also I have thought of going up & trying to find some kind of clothes rack to put in the spare bedroom to hang some from. Anyone seen anything on that order?

Marcy, I buy green or white plastic pots that have a saucer attached at the bottom. When I leave the saucer on, I raise the plant inside by inverting another pot and putting it inside the pot and as 'stand', then the plant on top. The inverted pot keeps the bottom of the pot out of the water. I think they are pretty cheap. I buy them on sale at the local RipOff Garden Shop and pay .69 to 1.20 each...including hanger.

(HAHAHA...once I hadn't checked my pots in a while and when I looked in the hanging pot the pot with the plant was sitting in water up to its' rim. HORRORS! I quickly pulled up the plant - and there must have been 10 feet of roots that had grown out and into the water and this plant was HAPPY. I think I really must have lucked out!!!)

Thank you, Mel. I've been thinking of taking photos of all windows and other places, but never got round to it... Now I've taken a quick photo tour of the house and I'll guide you through it and hope you like what you see. The sun outside made some photos a little difficult to take.

When you enter our house you'll find thomsonii and pauciflora to your right hanging next to our patio door.

Then we have the patio door to the right facing south.

The next is our dining room, also to the east.

And then we enter our kitchen, with a window in the west.

Then we stop at the bar.

We continue to our dining area, also facing west.

Then we go back to the entrance and before we walk upstairs we look into the living room and find this beautiful room divider that my father made for me when I was young. He was a black smith. On it I have carnosa and motoskei.

Sorry about the double post, but DG messed with me for a while...

We go upstairs and turn left and we'll find our guest room/Robins computer room facing west.

Perhaps you don't get much inspiration from these photos. We did look for a house with plenty of big windows which simplified things for me. All new hoyas will be trouble for me, but I'm working on trying to get Robin to want to build an extra room out from the dining room and I'll get lots of windows facing south and east... What a dream!

Oh, Christina, your house is beautiful! What georgeous plants. I love how you have them all in pretty pots too. I am going to show these to my roommate (who is wonderful, by the way) and tell him, "see, plants scattered throughout the house is NOT (as he puts it) 'clutter'." I have 90% of mine crammed into my bedroom window - thank the stars it is a decent size with southeastern exposure.

Christina, very nice pictures, you took full advantage of every window; looks like they were made just for plants with the big ledges on them. I sure do like your trellis you have your plants on.. all I could find was some that look like a ladder.. that is rounded on the top.. I like them, its just that I like yours better. Do you have the name of the company where a person can order them from?
I'm having a solarium room built right now off of my dinning room, just for my hoyas so they have a nice place for the winter and I can enjoy them better! :) I hope you BF comes up with that idea for you to have one! O.o

Great pics Christina .....I know you will get many follow-up posts about them......do any of the hoyas facing east or west get too hot in the summer or not too bad where you live in Sweden? Maybe the sun isn't so intense there?.....Does the Motoskei and carnosa bloom for you there where you have it?....Thanks for posting them.....They are really nice!

Wow Christina, that is something to look at! Does every room have a different smell? Which ever hoya is blooming? Maybe someday I will have to visit you and see for myself! Hint, hint! Lol!!

Very nice pictures!! I can understand about Christina wanting plenty of windows; we have 21 windows which is great until it's time for them to be cleaned!!

Wow, a plant lover's dream house.....large windows and wide window ledges. Your home looks lovely and your plants are beautiful Christina. I sure like the way you have them on those round trellises. I've never seen anything like that for sale here so I think I will see if I can make something like that.

They sure know how to make houses in Sweden for plant people!
I am soooo envious of all those lovely windows that you have filled with lush and beautiful hoyas. Also your decorating skill in arranging them in those beautiful pots and trellises has enabled your hobby to enhance the beauty of your home. Now that's what I would like to do, but mine always seems to end up looking more like a misplaced jungle. Ha.
Thanks for sharing your photos here. It gives me hope. :-)

Thank you all for the nice comments. I enjoy interior decorating and I think plants and nice pots are a big part of that. I used to have plain white pots, but they are now stacked in our basement...

I've made the photos as a page of itself on my website: http://www.myhoyas.com/Where%20do%20I%20keep%20all%20my%20hoyas.htm

I love the open, light feeling of your house, Christina...it is so inviting!!!

AWESOME, Christina! Thanks so much for taking the time to share your lovely home and beautiful plants. I cannot help but notice that every plant is tucked in a decorative pot and I love the trellis(es). You most certainly have a flair for decorating as everything looks like it belongs there and blends in with the decor. No doubt, you have inspired me! I am glad you put the page on your web site. I'll be visiting there allot for further inspiration. I feel a pot shopping trip coming on.
Do you do much pruning to keep plants so neat and shapely?

Thank you for showing us all your plants and how you have them displayed. You have perfect window ledges. Did you install them or did they come with the house? I have a lot of windows, but my window sills/ledges are very narrow and with plants on all the sills, I am not able to pull down my blinds. I like you how you have ledges built out away from the windows. I see you also have lighting above your plants. It looks like you set your potted Hoyas inside another pot. Guess it's not be a problem having too much water in the bottom of the pots , as you plants all looked great. I have thought of repotting my plants into smaller pots and then placing them into a large pot to make them more stable. It seems you have a lot of followers interested in your wire frames/trellis. From the looks of it, you must have bought the company out who makes them. I don't know why it is so hard for us to find a frame like that here in the U.S.

I will add some pictures later. All my Hoyas are grown indoors all year around. Deb

Christina, I have really enjoyed all your pics! I agree with the others....beautiful home and beautiful display of your plants. Thanks for posting them and giving us all something to drool over!

Hmmm, I think it would be great if others would do the same thing. Post pics of your plants in your home and/or greenhouse, decks, etc. for us all to enjoy. Any takers??? :-)

Wow, Christina! You're hoyas and the way you display are just perfect! Only thing wrong that I see is that I don't see a mess....lol! What ever your secret is....please pass it on!

Sharon, I am working on cleaning out the sunroom and greenhouse preparing for moving plants in for the winter. (A BUNCH of window washing going on) I'll post some pictures once I get the plants arranged.

Mel, that's wonderful!! I absolutely love to see everyone's plants and arrangements of plants...could never get tired of that! Whether it's just one shot of a common one, or shots of a multitude, or pics of the rare finds, blooming or not in bloom. It gives me hope of what some of my babies will grow up to be as well as ideas on how to grow them--hanging loose or trellised, etc. Hopefully others will join in as well.
