Hello from BC

Langley, BC, BC(Zone 8b)

Hi everyone
I joined a couple of weeks ago having used the plantfiles for long enough to feel deeply appreciative (and beginning to feel guilty )

I grew up on the coast here surrounded by the beautiful gardens of my aunts, gardened myself for a few years in Vancouver, then for a lot more in Chilliwack (rich soil, cold winds, hot summers, no drainage) and am now on 1/3 of an acre in Langley, where I have EXTREMELY well drained soil; arbutus trees, cistus, and eucalyptus thriving. The back of the property slopes sharply down and is naturally forested with douglas fir, cedar and hemlock and a couple of HUGE broadleaf maples; as well as the usual undergrowth (trillium in the spring) This shades the back, giving me a different environment (though still very dry)

My main love is old fashioned roses but I am very promiscuous. Having realized that I can at last grow bearded iris again, I am having quite a fling with them. I made a great silver bed each side of my drive here growing some more things I couldn't before -- the cistus mentioned above, phlomis fruticosa, halimiocistus and the more tender china and tea roses, but still lots of gallicas, damasks and albas; as well as bourbons, hps and portlands for repeat bloom. Trying some aril bred iris for the first time, so a little Mediterranean fusion adventure, too.

and and and.. my beloved old yashica died, so my DH -- make that DDDH -- bought me a digital camera yesterday. soon I will know how to use it, then...... STAND BACK.

looking forward to the rest of the year here, have already met some interesting gardeners.

Welcome to DG.

My daughter is in Vancouver and my husband has cousins in Chilliwack, but I must confess that my BC geography is not all that good. Just where is Langley?

Look forward to pictures once you learn how to use the DC.
