Here I go again......Pickerel Weed

Laurens, SC(Zone 8a)

I saw some of this in a small pond the other day. The guy didn't even know what it was. His was HUGE and full of blooms!! Very nice!! he has several Koi and this plant--that is about it in his pond. Says he got it when it was pretty small and it has grown and spread--the koi hide in it!! Anyone have small pieces, corms, offsets or whatever?? I am gonna NEED to go all out and dig an actual pond soon!! hehehe

Yes, Bonnie ... you most certainly are going to have to do just that! lol

I am *certain* I will have a whole bunch of Thalia to share with you come springtime. Mine start slowing down after they've finished blooming (which stinks because they look like they've not been properly cared for ... ). I've only divided and re-potted mine in early spring, otherwise I'd offer to give you a bunch of this stuff now.

I like Thalia because it has proven to be a very tough, hardy, "koi resistant" plant for me. Sure, the koi rummage anywhere they can get to, but the roots and rhizomes are so thick/dense/tough and the stem are so study that there's really very little damage they can do. Cover the soil at the top with some rocks bigger than what your koi can push around and you'll be just fine (and I assure, the new shoots will NOT be deterred by said rocks!)

Check it out and let me know! http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/1005/index.html

The blooms are VERY different than this man's plants however I LIKE it!! Ok--I will have to talk to ya in Spring about these!! Maybe someone else will have the purple one?? This is the one he has:

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... so *that's* what the wife brought home a few months ago!

Either I don't have this thing where it likes to be or it's not a terribly fast grower. The blooms are like a large cluster of tiny water hyacinth blooms. I see why ya like, Bonnie!

Laurens, SC(Zone 8a)

Yup--not too happy I guess cause the man who has these says his went nuts and spread like crazy. He DOES only have a medium sized clump but they are HUGE--the Koi he has which are minature whales (hehehe) HIDE in it so that should give you some idea??!! Yup!! Very nice and pretty!! Like Hyacinth--more blooms to the stalk but smaller too!! And seem to be long lasting blooms!! Bonnie

This guy has the plant in a corner away from the running water and the water is still--maybe that makes a difference??

Pickerel Rush is like one of the best filtration plants out there

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

On a whelm I placed the basket with Pickerl on top of the lava rocks in my biofalls at the first of Spring this year. It hasn't stopped the water flow but has grown four to five times biger than it's sister plant at the ponds edge.
