A few butterflies in Maryland

Linthicum Heights, MD(Zone 7a)

Yesterday, I was able to take this photo with three (3) Yellow Tiger Swallowtails, one (1) Black Tiger Swallowtail and one (1) Monarch feasting on a bunch of thistle plants.

mlm01, I have a Nikon D70 Digital SLR. The camera is often secondary to a lot of other things. My first digital camera was an Olympus 3000, 3.1 megapixels, point-and-shoot. I was very pleased with that camera except I wanted more lens flexibility provided by a digital SLR.

My gosh! These are fabulous!! I noticed that a lot of the photos are with a gravelly background... do you have some kind of sand/gravel puddle area for butterflies? You have such a variety!

Note to self: till up more yard and plant more buterfly plants. :-)

lilyfantn, All of the photos with the gravel background were taken the same day following an overnight rainstorm. It was either on a gravel roadway or gravel parking lot, nothing I designed. They were attracted to the moisture in the roadway. I never saw so many butterflies, mostly the Red Spotted Purple. I have seen all of these butterflies around my house but not to this degree. I do get quite a few Yellow and Black Tiger Swallowtails on my Butterfly Bush(es).
