Should I leave this alone and keep a better eye on the smaller pups or is it possible to have any luck getting pups this big separated from the main stalk......
Thanks .... Valarie
Did I wait to long to get the pups off....
it is in the ground..... I've been debating the issue of leave it in the ground or take it out this winter..... It did much better than I EVER anticipated and now I don't know what to do with it ......
Did you just cut them off with a knife.... ? Maybe I'll have to just dig him out completely and chop them off...... I just need to make sure they get a piece of root (RIGHT ?) ....
Brinda's banana looks like musa lasiocarpa, the Chinese Yellow Banana.
VS, do you have a shovel called a "sharp shooter?" Those are the best things to divide bananas with. I dig out big banana plants and give them to my neighbor. He removes all leaves and cuts the trunk about half way down, replants and waters in. Most make it, they are just shorter.
It would be easier to remove the pups when you dig it up this fall. Wash off the dirt so you can see the rhisome, then just pull or cut them apart. Cut off most of the leaves, repot and keep in a shady, warm location till they recover.
Thanks Calalily..... I'll give it a shot ....
It may take practice to divide them while they are in the ground. I still chop some off at the root from time to time. If there's even a little piece of the rhisome(root?) attached, they usually grow.
