I am supposed to be moving soon and if I actually do, there is a lovely double mauve-pink ROS on the property. The owners planted very little but that one is actually really nice and exciting for me. :)
HELLOBEBE...... You have mail!!!!!!
Oh, goodness--you have a lovely assortment of canna! I would love to trade for your 'Aida' and 'Maudie Malcolm.' I have a double lavendar (actually probably a triple) that I could give you several good cuttings from.
LMK? =)

MKJONES.....you have mail!!
Sue, this may sound dumb, but how do you successfully root ROS cuttings? I have tried several times but they never root for me. I know other gardeners do it--so please tell me the secret. I love ROS and would love to start other types and colors of them. I started a line of ROSs down one side of my yard where my neighbor's barbed wire pasture fence separates our properties. The barbed wire was so ugly to look at and the ROSs I have planted so far hide part of the fence on my side. They look so pretty when the different colors bloom but all mine are single ROSs except one pink one. I would love to get some different color double ROSs mixed in with the singles. Cuttings would be a good way to do this if I could learn how to root the cuttings.

C.B.....Not dubm at all!! I go out and cut me about 10 - 4" Willow branches form a Willow tree.
Remove all the leaves and put them in a pan of water on the stove.
I bring the water to a boil...then turn the heat off and let them sit until the water cools down completely.
While the water is cooling... I take a few jars, wrap the outside in newspaper and tape it.
When the water is cool...I pour it into the jars, recut my cuttings, and place them in the jars.
I leave the jars in an area with IN DIRECT sun light. I start checking them about a week later...if the water is starting to look cloudy...I refill them with willow water. As soon as roots start to form on the cuttings, I plant them in pots. Sometimes they will root in 2 weeks...sometimes it takes a bit longer.
Hope this helps!!
I used the same willow method but put the cuttings in colored glass bottles (Old wine bottles work good) I would take cuttings from my neighbors willow tree. He cut it down last week. Now I may have to get cuttings from a willow tree so I can grow my own cutttings. LOL
If I have a lot to root I will just throw some of his willow branches in the water to root also. kill two birds,
If you are not a wine drinker favorite resturants will save the bottels for you if you ask
Hope one of thes idead sill helplp
Great idea PICABO!!! My Son is a Bouncer at a bar in Bham....He brings me colored beer bottles to melt in the kiln and I make windchimes out of them...so I have tons of them. I fill them with a bit of sand and root my willows in them...duhhhhh I never thought about rooting my hardwood cuttings in them.
Geeze...you are pretty smart!! Thanks for the GREAT tip!!!
Now you are the smart one, I have seen the Road kill bottles and never know how long to fire. I do stain glass and pottery so I have the "Toys" I have a pottery kiln. Can you tell me how to fire the bottles.
My cousin runs a resturant and could get me all types of bottles. Do you root in the ones that you have fired?
Betty
Ohhhhhhh, both of you sound so creative!! I have never heard of using willow water before. I will have to try that for sure especially since I have a big Weeping Willow to help me out with that. Thank you both for the great ideas. I have used the colored glass jars before to root my Aucuba because it likes the darkness to root but never thought about doing that with the ROS cuttings. I love learning new gardening tricks. :) Thank you bunches!! :)
WOW...TOO COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you will fire the bottles to a 15 the raised lettering will stay on them... I also fire them to an 06 from time to time and they will get SUPER flat. You can also use kiln wash on stilts and put them on the sides, the end, and the neck of the bottles and make some awesome ashtrays or trinket trays with handles.
I have never rooted in fired bottles...they are always too flat.
CB... I did read an old thread the other night, where they just put willow cutting in a glass gallon jar full of water and let them sit for a few days and did not boil the water....but I want it right away so I boil it...LOL
I am impatient!!!
I wonder if willow water would do well for rooting brug cuttings? Just an idea.
Shoot...Brugs will root in any type of water...just make sure you change it regularly. Dont let it get green or cloudy..lol
Another good thing about the wine or beer bottle, I pull out the plant every few days and shake it up real well, it seems to get air back in the water.
Thanks Blk.. I am going to be firing some pottery next week. I'll stick a bottle in to see what happens..

Are you interested in cuttings from this one? This is pretty old, I don't know the cultivar. It's about 12 feet tall and just glorious. The new blooms are blue, then fade to pink.
I would be interested in your cannas Cleopatra and Pretoria, as well as the Australian Tree Fern babies.
I also have a bunch of siberian iris I'm going to offer for trade. I just dug and divided them. I'm posting the photo on the next post.
